This is the overture I was referring to; please note the "explosion wave" effect too. To my knowledge this was the first movie to have that and of course, it was copied left and right afterwards...

I like the part where they push the socialist agenda and show how happy and healthy the diverse crew is to be a slave on the ship in exchange for a box to sleep in and some fake food from the replicator.

It is a misnomer that Star Trek is socialist; it is actually far more libertarian than anything else.

There is NO affirmative action in Starfleet. You get your position because you earn it...

The mumps made the rounds big time then. Mine were the worst by far than most of the other relatives and friends around. They all thought I should have been one of the aliens on Star Trek. Seriously, I was teased unmercifully for a long time after that - didn't help that I was a Trekkie even at that young age!

 Quoting: Artemis Rand

When you mentioned 1988, I thought, no, I saw it much earlier and had to look it up. It was worked into "The Menagerie" which then made sense.

"The Cage" is the first pilot episode of Star Trek. It was completed in early 1965 (with a copyright date of 1964), but not broadcast on television in its complete form until late 1988. The episode was written by Gene Roddenberry and directed by Robert Butler. It was rejected by NBC in February 1965, and the network ordered another pilot episode, which became "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

Much original footage from "The Cage" was later incorporated into the first season two-parter, "The Menagerie".
[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" is the second pilot episode of the science fiction television series Star Trek. It was produced in 1965 after the first pilot, "The Cage", was rejected by NBC. Reportedly, Lucille Ball, who owned Desilu Studios (where the pilot was produced), persuaded NBC management to consider a second pilot, thereby exercising a special option agreement it had with Desilu, because she liked Gene Roddenberry and believed in the project. The episode was eventually broadcast third in sequence on September 22, 1966, and re-aired on April 20, 1967. On July 12, 1969, it was the first episode to be shown in the UK by the BBC.

Unfortunately, the original Star Trek was hijacked and ruined much like Batman.

The original shows had a comedic element which was completely lost in subsequent incarnations. Now it's all about being dark and mysterious.
