Schumann Resonance is a resonant electromagnetic, extremely low frequency (ELF), wave in the cavity formed by Earth's surface and the ionosphere.

Resonance means that one particular frequency that fits optimally in the boundary conditions (i.e. cavity) and starts to dominate the wave. For instance, the fundamental notes in string instruments are fundamental resonances. The wave nodes (zero amplitude) occur at the two fixed points of the string. In Schumann Resonance the electromagnetic wave start and end nodes occur at the ground and the ionosphere, respectively.

A resonant (or standing) wave retains optimally its energy and by injecting more energy (e.g. picking a string in a string instrument) at the resonance frequency will boost the amplitude rapidly. In other words, a resonant wave gains more energy most efficiently when the energy is fed in at the resonant frequency.
