Report on the August 2012 Brawley Earthquake Swarm in Imperial Valley, Southern California
March 2013

Its north–south extent ranges from the northern section of the Imperial fault, starting approximately 10 km north of the United States–Mexico international border and connecting to the southern end of the San Andreas fault, where it terminates in the Salton Sea. Larsen and Reilinger (1991), who defined a similar geographical extent of the BSZ, argued that the BSZ was migrating to the northwest, which they associated with the propagation of the Gulf of California rift system into the North American continent.

THE 2012 BRAWLEY SWARM

The 2012 Brawley swarm started near the town of Brawley at4:30 (UTC) on 26 August, with three events ofMw>5occurring within 5 min. The seismic activity picked up againat 11:43 (UTC) and continued at a steady rate. The three larg-est earthquakes (Mw5.3,Mw4.9, andMw5.4) in the sequenceoccurred over a period of 90 min, starting at 19:31 (UTC).The largest (Mw5.4) earthquake was widely felt across south-ernmost California, northern Baja California, and western Ari-zona. TheSCSNShakeMap showed strong to very strongshaking within a 10-km distance of the epicenter ( [link to www.cisn.org).The] causative fault of the 2012 swarm had not been pre-viously mapped. Nonetheless, surface fractures that are relatedto the swarm were identified both from InSAR images andfield observations. Prior occurrences of surface faulting in as-sociation with swarm activity within theBSZactivity includethe 2005 swarm (Lohman and McGuire, 2007;Rymeret al.,2011). The largest event of the 2005 swarm wasMw5.1, yetsurface rupture was up to 20 cm in that case. Similarly, the2006 Cerro Prieto swarm with the largest event ofMw5.4 hadsurface rupture along the Morelia fault of 20–30 cm (Suárez-Vidalet al., 2007). Also, just to the west of theBSZ, the ElmoreRanch eventMS6.2 of the 1987 Superstition Hills sequenceinvolved extensive surface rupture on a zone of cross-faults(e.g.,Hudnutet al., 1989;Sharpet al., 1989).In this report, we summarize the recent data and interpre-tations for this sequence. In particular, we highlight efforts to(1) find the surface rupture; (2) develop a finite source mod-eling using both seismic andGPSwaveforms, together with(3) data from creepmeters; and (4) a liquefaction array. Seismicity patterns of earthquake swarms due to fluid intrusion and stress triggering

Earthquake swarms are often assumed to result from an intrusion of fluids into the seismogenic zone, causing seismicity patterns which significantly differ from aftershock sequences. But neither the temporal evolution nor the energy release of earthquake swarms is generally well understood. Because of the lack of descriptive empirical laws, the comparison with model simulations is typically restricted to aspects of the overall behaviour such as the frequency–magnitude distribution.

It helps to have had a couple of geology courses from a Cal-Tech geologist/professor too.

As far as the swarms, here's a graphical representation of the last three, and they line up perfectly with these faults talked about in the video.

I didn't look where it hit, but Los Angeles has many areas that are built on sediment and fill.. They will feel the small ones stronger than other areas.
