“(The Earth) It seemed a flat disc with an upturned edge.” ~ Dr. Auguste Piccard Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer 1931
“(The Earth) seemed a flat disc with an upturned edge.” ~ Dr. Auguste Piccard (1884 – 1962), Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer, on his return from his 1931 record-setting balloon flight of about 15.8 miles.

Piccard made a total of twenty-seven balloon flights, finally reaching a then-record altitude of 23 miles. Wikipedia oddly enough (sarcasm) does not mention his description of the shape of the Earth.

That is why they named one of the Star Trek captain's "Piccard" -- to rub it in our faces, at least they have a weird sense of humor, better than none.

"They" know the truth, but we're not allowed to know.

"They" send shills to make fun of Flat Earth and scare the weaker people from daring to speak up or defend Flat Earth, even if they believe it's true.

Now, they go a step further and ban "Fake News", this is all an effort to shut up the Real Truthers who know:

The Earth IS Flat.

We did NOT zoom to the moon.

Virtually everything we see on TV or read in the "news" is fake.

the truth is earth is indeed a flat plane (minus local terrain and mountains, and elevation bulge in some parts)existing in a curved time space.

Does make one wonder why there are no antartic traversing flights when that would be the shortest distance between far south departure/destinations.

5 stars for introducing the great explorer, Piccard. Hadn't heard of him.

As for the rest, everything else I learned in school has been proven wrong... just about. Understand why people would continue to keep questioning.

Rather like the 31 genders in NYC. Once you start questioning gender identity, as we did in the 19th century with George Sand, et al, it just keeps going.

I will watch the video on youtube about the science mag in the 1930's and maybe get back to you here if this thread is active. It may be a few weeks. Busy time.

Thanks, OP.

I'll go ahead and explain why I'm comparing this to women's work. Thought for years that women traditionally had only certain jobs. Teaching and nursing OK, sewing, art, etc.

Only when a friend gave me a gift copy of The Medieval Woman, a book of days published by the Met (Art museum), did I see the incredible 1300's to 1500's French woodcuts of women working. . . .

as surgeons, writers, archers (defending a castle), miners, farmers, sales people, entertainers, and other non-traditional roles.... or we were told they were "non-traditional". Book by Sally Fox, FYI.

Another BIG lie. Why? When did this start? Mystery to me.

Book is by Sally Fox, and available for under 5 bucks online now.

Why all the lies? Why the nonsense? Qui bono?

This has been a headscratcher for some time.

I just looked because have been watching the moon this month, as the skies have been clear at last. The terminator, during the day, does not reflect the position of the sun. This is especially obvious near and at sunset, when it has leaned to the left, hard, when it should have been leaning down to the right (western position).

Anyway, it's a good mental workout. What do we know, what do we take for granted is true that isn't? That's why I'm rereading Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision. He takes on assumptions about planets and their origins in chapter one, which must have singed the hair of many an "expert".

When studying anthropology in college, was amazed to learn that much of what we have been taught is fact, is just what the French Academy of Sciences voted on during the 1800's.

For example, there was a huge debate over changes over time. Catastrophism versus the slow, incremental earth change (and species change) idea. Believe it or not. It was ONLY a vote that determined what would become dogma. In many other cases, hypotheses were simply taught as facts. More than you will believe, once you start digging.

Thanks for this most bizarre and unexpected look at Auguste Piccard, OP.

For which departure/destination pairs are you suggesting would traverse Antarctica?

The closest I'm aware of is Sydney to Santiago which the great circle path takes it close. And there ARE non-stop flights for that route that take about 12-13 hours.

Your math is off, he reached an altitude of 121,440 ft.

Exactly how high does one need to be to see the supposed curvature of the earth if it truly is a globe?
No one has ever seen a perfect circle, nor a perfectly straight line, yet everyone knows what a circle and a straight line are.
Perceived circles or lines are not exactly circular or straight, and true circles and lines could never be detected since by definition they are sets of infinitely small points.

There are several reasons why it's not used, including wind/weather patterns, but the main thing is that it puts you a long way from help if something goes wrong.

You can fly to the pole though, and lots of flights have gone across.
