If elected this week Hillary Clinton will turn up the heat on brinkmanship with Russia. Democrats insist Russia is behind the DNC hack—never mind evidence, there is none—and Obama has directed the CIA to launch a cyber attack on Russia.
The CIA’s RadioFreeEurope and RadioLiberty claim a Russian hacker group has taken responsibility for the October 21 internet outage in the United States, Europe, and Asia. (For more on the CIA’s Radio Free Europe, see: Persuasion, Propaganda, and Radio Free Europe: The New Archive).
New World Hackers claimed responsibility for the attack via Twitter, though U.S. authorities said they could not verify the claim. They said they organized networks of "zombie" computers to throw 1.2 terabits per second of data at servers managed by Dyn Inc.
VP Joe Biden said publicly Russia is behind the attacks.
Russia has denied it is hacking the US election and is preparing for the promised US attack after the election.
On October 21 SC Magazine, a website for IT security professionals, talked with Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US.
The US government has not yet provided any evidence that the cyber-attacks on the DNC were organized by Russian hackers. Meanwhile, Yuri Ushakov, the Russian presidential aide, says Russia has already begun designing protective measures, writes Eugene Gerden.
The planned measures have not been disclosed, however, according to the press-service of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), they may involve increasing cyber-security on the e-mail servers and databases of Russian special services including the FSB, Foreign Intelligence Service and the Russian Military Intelligence.
Particular attention will be also paid to strengthening cyber-security on internal networks and correspondence by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as, according to FSB, hackers will try their best to locate and then publish details about any cooperation by the Russian government with various political regimes and organizations that are under international sanctions or accused of war crimes.
Russia may also swap out software provided by western vendors with domestic products, according to Anton Tretyakov, deputy director of a Russian software developer.
In October Obama said the US will hit Russia with a “proportional” response.
“The president has talked before about the significant capabilities that the U.S. government has to both defend our systems in the United States but also carry out offensive operations in other countries,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.
Craig Murray, the former British ambassador to Uzbekistan, told Sputnik on November 2 he believes the Podesta and Democratic National Committee emails were not leaked by Russian hackers, but by a Washington insider.
"WikiLeaks has never published any material received from the Russian government or from any proxy of the Russian government. It's simply a completely untrue claim designed to divert attention from the content of the material,” Murray said.
"There is no chance whatsoever that Russia is going to ever attack the United States, that simply isn't going to happen," he added.
