Trying to camp without a camp fire in north Alabama is like going to a water park and not being able to swim. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69537581 A fire ban anywhere in the South is an advisory that is mostly ignored. Picture Florida burning, really burning big time where small cities were being evacuated. Statewide ban on all burning. National news far more than now. A small smoke column is spotted. Some idiot was still doing a backyard burn and wasn't even there to supervise it with a garden hose. It was threatening a pile of lumber so it was time to put in a line and at least save the lumber. The owner came out and was upset till he saw his property was being saved. He was a local Sheriffs Deputy. |

The Creek running across my place has dried up and only has a couple of puddles left. Even the Choctawhatchee River can be walked easily. It's usually about waist/chest deep or more, but yesterday it was only cankle deep. Makes for easy fishing when you can walk from hole to hole and they are all holed up in a few deep pockets. Like shooting fish in a barrel. Catch 37 Freezer Bass in a 1/4 mile stretch yesterday. |

There are quite a few fires in NE Charlotte as well. With some evacuations. Driving back to Georgia there were also fires in the mountains and very hazy skies. Lakes and rives looked really low, too. |

darth User ID: 70183558 United States 11/13/2016 11:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As an engineer, I recognize a few things: 1. Droughts and floods are normal and will strike various parts of the country at different times. 2. The world will need more and more food; therefore, the USA, which has been an agricultural leader, should have a goal to produce even more food and fiber. 3. We have the capability to move water from places that have too much, e.g., lower Mississippi Valley, to places that need water, e.g., West Texas and the high plains. I propose that we build a nationwide system of aqueducts and reservoirs to move water when we need to. Farmers and other users can pay for the projects via bonds over time from user fees. BTW, since we have natural gas in abundance, we can use that as an energy source for the pumps required. For example, the oil deposits in Alaska often have vast amounts of methane hydrate above them. Ditto the Gulf of Mexico. With a pipeline, that will create a source of natural gas for centuries. I think the first project is move massive amounts of water from East Texas to West Texas and the high plains. The soil is quite fertile in many areas, but there is insufficient water for irrigation. After that, the desert Southwest can be irrigated and, finally, California. Economies thrive on PRIMARY production such as factories, farms, mines, oil, gas, and timber. Without primary production of goods, you are stuck with low and declining wages in service economies. It is NOT possible to shut down all primary production and survive economically. |
