Message Subject Feral cat - sick?

Well a feral cat that has come by for years, been a good friend, appears not to be feeling so well. I tried to adopt him, like I have for others, but the test showed he had fiv (sp?). Basically, his back legs, though he walks fine, seem to be aching? If you pick him up he growls, never did that before, and his left ear if you touch it he shakes his head.

I put mite solution in both ears, and have been giving him antibiotics now for the past two days, front loading the dose (double). I took a paper towel and sprayed it down with flea and mite solution and wiped it over his body, as I did not want to soak him down, now that winter has come, but living in the west, nights are not too bad at the moment.

Picked up a foam cooler, cut a hole in it and put a towel in the bottom, and over it for a warm shelter.

Is it possible that fleas got a hold of him? I know he has been scratching like crazy for the past few days, before I saw his sick symptoms, should have gave him the flea/mite solution sooner. I hear that fleas can lower potassium levels, making muscles hurt, if they get out of hand (should I give him pediolite?)? I spray my yard religiously, but maybe he picked them up around the neighborhood, though he pretty much stays around my property.

He is eating and drinking very well and I had some extra A/D prescription food left over from a previous cat that I had for a very long time that I had to put down last year - broke my heart.

Anyways, thoughts? I really do not want to take him to the vet as I have my own cat that has issues and has cost me quite a bit. Not too many vets in my town, and they charge ridiculous prices. Thanks again!

If you have TARC buses in your town, just give him a good chuck under the rear tires...
