Bosses of NSA Chief Mike Rogers, Floated as Possible Trump Cabinet Pick, Want Him Fired: Sources

The bosses of National Security Agency director Admiral Mike Rogers, who has been floated as a potential pick for national intelligence director under the Trump administration, asked the Obama administration to fire him just last month.

Rogers' bosses — Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper — advised the White House that he be removed last month, before it was reported that Rogers was meeting with President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday in New York City.

Rogers is also the head of U.S. Cyber Command. Those close to the situation say Carter has long been unhappy with Cyber Command's secret hacking operations against ISIS, which he views as less aggressive and effective than they should be. Carter warned Rogers last year that he wanted to see more cyber operations against the terror group in Iraq and Syria, officials said.

Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, asked for further explanation of the reports in a letter to Carter and Clapper Saturday. He said he will convene a hearing at the earliest opportunity.

"Since Admiral Rogers was appointed as NSA Director in April 2014, I have been consistently impressed with his leadership and accomplishments," Nunes said in the letter, adding "I know other members of Congress hold him in similarly high esteem."

Current and former intelligence officials have previously told NBC News that Rogers is extremely unpopular among the NSA workforce because of a re-organization he has implemented, and also because he is frequently away from the office. Morale at the spy agency, which was crushed by the Snowden leaks, slipped further over the last year, say people familiar with the situation.

The NSA director took personal leave and traveled to Manhattan on Thursday, where he met with Trump at Trump Tower. Afterward, The Wall Street Journal reported that he was a leading candidate to be the next director of national intelligence.

Rogers from his posts as leader of the National Security Agency and United States Cyber Command after top officials expressed frustration over the speed at which Admiral Rogers had moved to combat the Islamic State and over the agency’s repeated loss of closely guarded secrets, administration and intelligence officials said Saturday.

President-elect Donald J. Trump is considering Admiral Rogers, who is responsible for surveillance and the growing arsenal of cyberweapons, for a top post in his administration, including director of national intelligence overseeing all 16 intelligence agencies. Admiral Rogers met with Mr. Trump on Thursday, apparently without the White House’s knowledge.

Why would Trump even remotely want a man who worked for Obama, the former President?! That's crazy!
All new President's install their own people who will be loyal to them and the new administrations policy agenda.
Draining the swamp would certainly include a new Director of Intelligence unencumbered by an opposing ideology?!

The heads of the Pentagon and the nation’s intelligence community have recommended to President Obama that the director of the National Security Agency, Adm. Michael S. Rogers, be removed.

The recommendation, delivered to the White House last month, was made by Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter and Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., according to several U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

Action has been delayed, some administration officials said, because relieving Rogers of his duties is tied to another controversial recommendation: to create separate chains of command at the NSA and the military’s cyberwarfare unit, a recommendation by Clapper and Carter that has been stalled because of other issues.

The news comes as Rogers is being considered by President-elect Donald Trump to be his nominee for director of national intelligence to replace Clapper as the official who oversees all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies. In a move apparently unprecedented for a military officer, Rogers, without notifying superiors, traveled to New York to meet with Trump on Thursday at Trump Tower. That caused consternation at senior levels of the administration, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal personnel matters.

The White House, Pentagon and Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment. The NSA did not respond to requests for comment. Carter has concerns with Rogers’s performance, officials said. The driving force for Clapper, meanwhile, was the separation of leadership roles at the NSA and U.S. Cyber Command, and his stance that the NSA should be headed by a civilian.

Rogers only joined the swamp very recently and since he did Obama hasn't liked how aggressively Rogers has been able to develop and use intelligence toward efforts to knock out ISIS (ISIS itself being a creation of Obama and Clinton).
This and the fact that "the enemy" wants to fire Rogers (for doing a good job to stamp out ISIS) should also attract Trump to a man of this much experience and expertise.

Don't miss the point either that the recent counter coup to the Clinton cabal's efforts to force her election was mounted in large part by our nation's intelligence agencies and those capable in cyberweaponry/warfare in particular.

All of the above would make Michael Rogers a prime candidate to be Trump's DNI.

Like O wants ISIS destroyed. lol! Some shady stuff going on here.

Yeah, that's right. Rogers was ACTUALLY trying to do his job and that was taking out ISIS, Obama's proxy army.

The other related wrinkle is there are multiple reports out there stating that there are CIA-back rebels in Syria and there are Pentagon-backed rebels in Syria and...these two different rebel forces are fighting each other!

Seems like a pretty dumb move by his present "bosses".

Obama fired all his competent generals.

I thought the very same thing. By impatiently (and for inappropriate reasons - the man did his job TOO well) firing Rogers, his bosses inadvertently freed him from employment in the Obama Administration and made him available to be included instead in a Trump Administration.

Plus, you're right, some of the blow back would be the fact that undoubtedly Rogers would be privy to little known information related to his bosses and others in the intelligence community that are also likely of interest in a Trump Administration.

The source of the leaks and they didn't know who was doing it.

The number of indications that Obama has no plans to leave the White House in 2017 are really beginning to mount up.

Obama is on record on many occasions saying that Trump would never be President.

Obama ans Michelle both refused to greet President-elect Trump or Melania Trump curbside as they arrived at the Whitehouse. Such a greeting is customary and is important for an amicable transfer of power.

Obama and Michelle failed to arrange for a portrait session with themselves and President-elect Trump and Melania. Such a picture-taking session to memorialize the arrival of the new President-elect in his first official visit to the Whitehouse is customary. Pictures from such a session also aids in portraying a friendliness and respect between the couples which are helpful things to to project to the American people to allow them to anticipate an eventual peaceful transfer of power.

President-elect Trump has been informed he will not be able to work from the Oval Office at the Whitehouse for the first year in his Administration due to needed security upgrades that must be installed. Use of the Oval Office is customary and legitimizes a newly inaugurated President in the public's eyes.

President-elect Trump has also been informed he will not be able to fly on Air Force One at the beginning of his Administration. This is supposedly because Air Force One has reached its expected age limit and needs to be replaced with a new custom modeled similar plane. Use of Air Force One is customary and garners special respect for a newly inaugurated President.

Michelle Obama's french dress designer has already very publically and rudely absolutely refused to make any dresses for Melania Trump. Such actions are unnecessary and very hurtful.

None of the above bodes well for a peaceful transfer of power.

Ashe Carter is a smart man, would be nice if he was on the right team.

I have to admit I was thinking the very same thing.

I always got the impression Obama did all those firings to lessen the chance of the military mounting a military takeover of the government in defense of the Constitution.

Such an occurrence was not so far fetched of a possibility once the level of treason committed by Clinton, and by association Obama, was made known to the American public.

This would have been understandable as there was collusion between the Secretary of State, the AG, and the FBI Director. In other words, the enemies we needed to defend against were domestic, something which is specifically addressed in the oath all military personnel swear to uphold.

Clapper is gone and Carter will be next. Beat to the punch.
