President-elect Donald Trump's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday is raising red flags - not because of what was said, but because of who was in attendance.
After the meeting, Abe told reporters, "It was a meeting that convinced me we will be able to build a relationship of trust". Mr. Trump himself said nothing of substance after meeting Abe, posting on Facebook only that it had been "a pleasure to have Prime Minster Shinzo Abe stop by my home and begin a great friendship".
During the campaign, Trump alarmed Japan and South Korea, two of America's strongest allies, by suggesting they were free-riding on U.S. security commitments. It comes after Trump's repeated suggestions during the campaign that Japan should shoulder a bigger financial burden regarding USA military forces stationed in the region.
Trump had also expressed his opposition to the US-led 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade pact. The pair agreed to meet again for broader and deeper talks when their schedules allow, he said.
"I am now confident that President-elect Trump is a trustworthy leader". The comment increased doubts about US' supplication of security to countries like Japan and South Korea. According to the Japan official they had this conversation in a "warm atmosphere". Hours before Abe and Trump met, Obama's secretary of state, John Kerry, and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida met in Lima to discuss the Paris climate accord - a deal Trump has pledged to exit.
Whether Trump's first meeting with Abe has motivated him to stand by his prior stances or rethink them remains to be seen. Abe gave Trump a golf club, and received a golf shirt from the real-estate mogul.
Trump may have agreed to the meeting with Abe to show a presidential side to a US population that is still trying to come to grips with his election.
However, Trump seems to be taking advice on foreign policy. Trump attacked Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign for using her government connections to enrich herself. He indicated that USA troops would be withdrawn from Japan if Tokyo did not cover all expenses related to the hosting of the US military.
Japan, whose own military is restricted by a pacifist constitution drafted by the USA after World War II, relies heavily on America's troops and nuclear weapons for deterrence against growing threats from North Korea and an increasingly powerful China.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was only the second to get through, in a call set up by sports legend Greg Norman who is golfing buddies with Trump, it emerged Thursday.
