Help Needed. Sick cats at home....
I hope someone can shed some light for me.

I have spent close to $500 in the past 2 weeks on my cats. $500 - in the two weeks leading up to Christmas - yeah this has been fun. They are all sick, like with the flu or something. Lots of sneezing, some coughing, all have temps.

I took the sickest one to the vet 2 weeks ago, he hadn't been eating and I could see he had lost weight. He had a fever, which shocked me as I didn't realize he was all that sick, other than lack of appetite and weight.

Well, he tested him for leukemia - at my urging (since the symptoms seemed to point that way - gave him an antibiotic when the test came back negative for leuk. Also gave a steroid, and said come back in two weeks.

So in the meantime, ALL the rest of my cats got sick (sneezing, fever, etc.). So today, 3 cats went to the vet....including the one from two weeks ago - and - HE STILL HAD A FEVER!!! AND LOST MORE WEIGHT!!! Not getting better, apparently.

WTF.

I'm at a loss here. I mean, I GUESS the next step is blood tests to determine exactly what they all got sick from (since ONE of them apparently infected everyone else), but I really don't have THAT much money. The past 2 weeks has cost $500 and it's NOT been fun, given it's Christmas and all.

Anybody have any ideas what might be wrong with my fur babies? Anybody experienced this? Could it be that they've all just gotten the same strain of a "cold" or flu or some kind of thing? BTW - they are all indoor cats, and never go outside.

** One last thing - if you're going to post some stupid shit like, "just kill them all and freeze the carcasses to eat later," or something similarly inane, I swear I will ban you. I'm not in the mood for stupid jokes about cats. I love my cats, AND I don't want them to suffer with some kind of illness, and I'm worried they'll just get worse until this is figured out.

Thanks for any input from other cat lovers!

I take around 150 mg (half of a 250 mg) amoxicillin and put it in a tiny bit of can tuna with more tuna water.
If a cat can't smell it's food it won't eat it usually. You can also buy kitten formula at the grocery and that will give them fat.

Your cats have an upper respiratory infection. You can try non alcoholic echinacea and goldenseal. Put 10 drops of both in 1 oz of water. Give 1-1 1/2 cc twice daily for a week. This has worked for my cats in the past.

So I can give them antibiotics meant for humans?

I have some amoxicillin, so that's easy.

I also have echinacea (I take it pretty regularly). Is it the same as people echinacea?

Thank you both for your suggestions!

Re: Help Needed. Sick cats at home....
Get some food grade peroxide at your health store and dilute it with distilled water.

Put it in a clear sterile spray or dropper bottle put about 1 full dropper or three full pumps of your spray bottle into the cats water.

This will keep your cats healthy and they wont get sick.

The Peroxide adds oxygen to the body killing infections and bacteria.

I thought a blood test would have been done first time you brought your little one in!

I agree with trying the amoxicillin. My shih Tzu has had UTIs before and I've treated her myself measuring carefully the dose.

Hope they are all ok hfhf

Get some amoxicillin from that vet. Give it to the cats twice a day and see if they are getting better. The vet has seen the animals and knows you have sick ones, so he should be ok with it.

Wouldn't you think the antibiotics the vet gave the one would have worked on upper respiratory infect? He lost another pound in two weeks. Although he doesn't seem sick, something must be wrong if he's still losing weight, no?

I am guessing the antibiotic he gave was "stronger" (I'm assuming) than amoxicillan?

I can get amoxicillin from him, tho.

I think he didn't do the blood tests cause he's trying to save us money (it WAS right before Christmas, and there are a LOT of cats!).

I will definitely insist on it - at least on one cat - if they don't get better pretty quick, now that EVERYONE has had these antibiotics.

I think after 2 or 3 doses they should be feeling better, if not, it may be a virus and they don't respond to antibiotics.

Go to your pet store like PetSmart, or another big chain and you'll find antibiotics in the bird section and you can use that for them, its all the same.
But, you will have to give them some kind of probiotics to counteract the damage you will do to their system and bring them back in balance.
Hope your babies get well OP....i know the love you speak of as i love my babies like children too!

The antibiotics should have, but it could be a fungal infection rather than a bacterial. Have you noticed blood in your cats stool? If so, he/she may have irritable bowel syndrome? That could be causing the symptoms. Did the vet do a complete blood panel to check liver/kidney function and thyroid levels?

Re: Help Needed. Sick cats at home....
I once rescued cats...I couldn't afford a vet...I know a lot of alternative health info from my own health issues...when a cat I had had some sort of infection, id give them my homemade silver water...it's easier to buy it at a health food store, tho...you want colloidal silver...or nano silver...add a very little bit, just a few drops, to their water. They won't taste it. If they quit drinking, get a dropper and put a few drops in their mouths...I've saved numerous cats this way!!! Repeat several times a day, for about ten days...you should see improvements after about two days. Praying.

Good luck. Cats are tough. I take care of a feral tom, once something got ahold of him, chewed his head up pretty bed.. treated it externally for infection. He lost so much weight I thought he would die. Fat as can be now. Hope your cays bounce back.

If it is virus oriented you can get Lysine gel.

I smear on front paws.I know the powdered Lysine is cheaper

but I have had no luck in pets eating in cat food.rose

There is a new antibiotic for cats that lasts two weeks. It's usually used on difficult cats and may not be the best choice medicine wise. I'm thinking he should have Clavamox.

Before you spend anymore money, call and ask to talk to the Vet. Most will usually take your call, and tell him what's going on and ask what you should do next. Good luck!
