For one thing, there is no actual crime, no victim, and the way this was conducted is cheap and grotesque. The undercover cop texted with this guy for an hour, and when the deal was already made (the ad was for a 19 year old girl) the cop then made a vague comment about how they might be younger than 19. Also, they nailed the guy the moment he walked up to the front door of the hotel. Shouldn't he be walking into a room, shouldn't there be a 15 year old girl there, and shouldn't money pass hands before he is convicted of this 'crime'? Yes, the guy is obviously a dirtbag. Yes, 15 year old girls are pimped out at expensive hotels against their will. How about the cops find the situations where this is happening? I am hardly defending this guy's actions, but a lot of cases like this are being thrown out of court - because there hasn't actually been a crime committed. This is not too far off of a thought crime. |

This is not too far off of a thought crime. Your version of the events that transpired is inaccurate. The cop didn't make "a vague comment" about being younger than 19, following the conversation -- the cop flat out stated that "she" was only 15. The full conversation between Katz and the cop is posted here: [link to techcrunch.com (secure)] Also, your statement that no crime was committed is false, as well. Solicitation, in and of itself, is a crime -- and is commonly prosecuted as such. This man knowingly solicited (what he thought was) a 15-year-old girl for sex. That is a crime. End of story. And, it isn't just a "thought crime", at all, in this situation. Katz wasn't just pondering the solicitation of an underage girl for sex, he was actually taking physical steps in an attempt to do so. By the way, do you have any links related to "a lot of cases like this" being thrown out of court? I haven't been able to find anything that backs that statement up, yet, myself. (To the contrary, the majority of these cases do appear to be successfully prosecuted.) |
