Re: Norway First country to switch off FM radio yesterday
Maybe I'm missing something here- what is the supposed merit in cutting off an entire avenue of communication?

This accomplishes 2 things:

A.) Eliminate a means of communication.

B.) Forces people to buy digital radio.

What was wrong with broadcasting dual analog/digital?

Billions of FM radios were sold over the years.

Analog FM is still better in many ways. The digital broadcast will cut out where the analog will simply fade.

They blame it on capacity problems on the FM band

Sounds like corporate takeover and a means to make money. Too bad. Geez, never thought I would see that happen. There is no talk of doing that where I live at present.

Lived in Germany when the big internet change happened and land-line phones were digitalized. About a month after the change, someone was doing some construction in our state and we lost our phones for a week. LOL

We already turned off analog TV.
I think this made it possible to do more ionosphere research with eiscat on UHF and VHF bands

Probably difficult to monitor people with an FM radio, but easy with a digital radio. Just saying.

Re: Norway First country to switch off FM radio yesterday
am i right or not in saying the background hiss in between stations on FM is the noise of the background radiation from the big bang?

is this the real reason for all this? to hide something in the hiss?

Norway's government thinks they can sell more licenses so it's a money generator. Also read somewhere that ~60% of Norwegians questioned didn't approve and something like 30% didn't care.

Update, in a few days there will be more areas where FM is turned off

"As of June 21, NRK will only transmit radio not digitally to Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland, Rogaland, Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder."

Our radio signal grows smaller and smaller.

All that will be left is for us to deliberately broadcast to a point in the sky.

Maybe this is a good thing?

Tomorrow 20th they shut off NRK fm canals in most of the south, and in December on the 13 th of December all FM , also commercial stations, will be off.

Tomorrow they shut off NRK here in the south at 11:11 (!)

they need the FM bands for EISCAT (a type of HAARP) it is said

Thanks Northlights, the official reasons seem bogus to me.

I also expect to be the real reason to by related to that big Haarp station in Norway.

Less interference means they have better pinpoint accuracy.

Ha! Tried posting something which explains the frequencies and what they need them for, and the forum ate the post with the link right away. Anyway, you can do a search.
They also have shut down the VHF bands. No Tv on the airwaves in Svalbard either.

Today they switched off almost all the rest of FM.
There are a few very local stations left.

The bandwidth is needed for "research " on the ionosphere and stuff, just google Eiscat or Eiscat3D
