That's why doctors do their best to get us patients off the drug as soon as possible. The good thing about it is that it does stop the little white blood cells from eating my heart. I know from experience that that's what it does. I've stopped taking it in the early stages and been thrown into rejection. Also realy low doses such as 3 prednisone does not do much harm. It's only the high doses taken for a long period of time that actually does damage. I've been taking the stuff since I was 6 years old. And would have been off it sooner but I kept going into rejection. Dreams will begin as they fade into chaos. |

Don't talk like it is unless you know someone who has gone through one or you've been through one yourself. I'd be happy to tell you everything I went through with it and break it down for you. I can also tell you the reason for going through it. Quoting: SpectrumBlueI'm 23 now and I've been going through this since I was 6 years old. You are on your second heart. What is the lifespan of an organ transplanted heart? I know it's an individual thing. But what is its typical lifespan? And that's how long it lasted for me. I've known other people who have lasted at most, 25 years on their first heart. My new heart has lasted almost 7 years so far, but I'm in line for a 3rd heart transplant because this one is starting to fail on me. Dreams will begin as they fade into chaos. |

Do they fail because its a fine line between to much or not enough immune suppressing drugs? Quoting: RythymRingFirst one failed because I had a few months where I thought it was ok to stop taking my medicine because I felt great and could run jump and have fun like any normal kid. I went into grade 4 rejection (worst rejection) and nearly died. I was fine till a year later when because of my rejection, my arteries started to narrow and I needed a stent and my heart started to not beat as well. I was stuck on a heart transplant list and 11 days later I recieved my heart. In the beginning of a heart transplant there is a battle over balancing the medications so it won't hurt my heart and it won't hurt the rest of my organs either. There are the rejection pills and there are the maintenance pills (which are mostly vitamins anyway) to counteract the effects of the rejections pills. Doctors will always start out at high doses after a transplant or after a really bad rejection like the grade 4 one. But depending on how the heart is doing, they will slowly taper down the medications and a week after each taper, they will do a biopsy of the heart to make sure the patient isn't in rejection. A year out after the transplant the patient is out of the woods and the meds are at a low lvl and usually just there for maintanance. Doctors will usually slow down on the amount of times they biopsy in a year, and after that first year of the transplant, if the patient is doing everything the doctored ordered, then it's smooth sailing and they can usually do anything a normal person can do. Dreams will begin as they fade into chaos. |

Quoting: RythymRingThere are many different programs set to help pay for a transplant. Before a transplant the patient talks to a social worker or the patient's guardians, and the social worker helps to give them options to help pay for the transplant. There are a plethora of organisations and programs out there to help prospective transplantees to be able to recieve a transplant. Dreams will begin as they fade into chaos. |
