That is an aspect I totally take for granted. I was in the military, graduated outward bound, spent a summer living in the woods of Maine, and another 7 weeks in Oak Creak Canyon here in Az. And I'm a big fan of minimalist camping.

I've started fires many ways, and carry a variety of tools to do so. Lighters. A small magnifying glass. A Swedish fire steel. A couple of magnesium fire starters. Waterproof matches.

Redundancy is prudent... but practice makes perfect. Or as close to it as you're going to get.

Oh, it's going to be just fine. Absolutely beautiful. And peaceful.

We're just going to have to do a little work and take out the trash.

You know, this is something I've given a lot of thought to.

So I went to Home Depot and bought a 25 watt solar panel and charge controller... think it was like $75 on sale. Picked up a 1000 watt SINE power inverter and a couple or group 26 deep cycle RV batteries.

I use this outfit when I take the Lance out camping... which is more like having an apartment on the back of my truck, but point being, I have plenty of power to charge phones, use my laptop, lights, dvd player and a TV without ever having to plug into a shore line. I also pay close attention how it's being used. I just set it up and trickle charge the batteries constantly. Don't think I've ever used more then 30-35%.

But I'm also in a place that gets 345 days of sunshine a year.

I'm trying to remember, but I think the whole set up cost me about $300-$350... and I have an power until the batteries die... which, depending on use, can be years.

It doesn't matter how many manuals you have, it won't matter how many 'Navy Seal survival weekends' you attend, if you don't practice this constantly to the point whereby it becomes second nature, you are in all likelihood FUCKED.

I don't really understand the obsession with 'preppers' anyway. QUALITY of life to me is so much more important than quantity.

If you are SERIOUS about survival, one of the first things you should learn is how to END your own life - or the lives of others - quickly and humanely. Then after that you can rest easy knowing that if things get REALLY BAD, you can always just resign and go out with dignity.

That's where you're wrong. The people with the best weapons are the ones who will live longest with the highest quality of life. Primitive hunter gathers won't beat people armed with assault rifles.

That's why it's stupid to sell guns to people you don't want shooting your forces. If the Europeans had never sold guns to the world, the rest of the world would still be using crude muskets at best.

REALLY don't want an EMP...

Place your electronics in a steel (ferric) box. Doesn't have to be grounded. EMP, even from specifically designed nuclear weapon EMP devices are not very effective. "One Second After" (which I own) is great literary theater but not science based. Electronics is my occupation since 1971, still is.
