Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Shasta Lake is so low you can kayak through an old historic train tunnel.. Quoting: Humanitarianlike Shasta is always releasing water to keep the salinity barrier in the delta correct. The leaders in California do not believe the Earth can heal herself. Shasta lake will dry up someday soon. this is truth.. they cannot undo the errors of man.. without the magnetic reversal in due time is how earth will get that done so she CAN heal. |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed My take on events is that the spill way is still in trouble. Since the repairs, there has been an uptick in ground movement. The dam can come down with water or without. It wont take a 6m eq to knock the thing down, a whole lot of little quakes can do the same damage. That whole dam is a recipe for liquefaction. At some point, the red clay dirt will crumble, sooner more so than later. Notice all the road repairs being done in the area? Same thing. |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Thermalito Afterbay is holding steady at 130' Oroville total outflow is down to 1600 CFS, with river releases at 1,275. That's only about 325 CFS going to the Congressman rice farmer. Probably starting to feel the pinch. I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street. |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed ... Quoting: muckuh IT IS GOING BELOW 1300 CRUNCH..NOT MUCH LEFT TO GHURGHLE.... THEY KEEP LOWERING IT TO MAKE IT 'LOOK' LIKE THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING...IT'S JUST RUNNING DRY...UH! Yeah I see the river release is scheduled for 1,250. We'll see it diminish further. Meanwhile, the clay brick is drying out and shrinking. It is gonna be a real clusterfuck when that thing lets go. I should be safe here. Just a spectator. What do you mean by clay brick? Are you talking about the core of the dam? Thanks. Yes, the 'impervious core' of the dam. It is comprised of red clay soil and crushed rock from the dredger tailings that are ubiquitous around the Oroville area. When red clay dries, it shrinks and cracks. When it gets wet, it swells and turns into gumbo. It is known as an 'expansive soil' and not suitable for building on, because it moves around depending on changes in moisture. Our local school district was building a new school back around 2005. The engineers demanded the red clay soil under the building foundations be removed and non-expansive soil to be brought in to replace it. This elevated the cost and extended the timeline for building the school. But they had their reasons. Red clay is not a suitable foundation soil, BECAUSE IT MOVES. Yet, some fools in the 1960s built the Nation's tallest dam using red clay soil. ... Quoting: muckuh IT IS GOING BELOW 1300 CRUNCH..NOT MUCH LEFT TO GHURGHLE.... The more I learn about the operation and maintenance (or lack thereof) of this huge liability, the more my concerns grow. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed I have been paying more attention to the reservoir outflow and the river release numbers. The reservoir outflow has now dropped to around 1,600 CFS. The river release is now down to around 1275 CFS or so. I am pretty sure that 1,275 is pretty much the minimum they can release to maintain river flow for the fishes. The next week or so will be interesting. The river valve flow will diminish as the reservoir elevation drops. At some point, they will be dumping all of the outflow into the river. Because they have to. Maybe they (DWR) think they can fake it along for as long as possible, but I don't see it happening into October/November when the rains come (if they come). I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street. |

Silt has been accumulating in the reservoir since it was originally filled. Accelerating especially after years with lots of fires. Lots of mud and debris washing down into the reservoir when the rains come and the watershed is bare of vegetation. Remember rain? For the last two summers in the AZ Sonoran desert it was 100% Nonsoon. This year we got a really robust Monsoon - so much so it cleared AZ of its highest drought status over a couple, maybe three weeks time, but it came with a price for some! Here near Oroville, we get major wet (flood years) around every ten years or so, it seems. I have been here since late 1985 and have experienced 1986, 1997, 2006 and of course 2017. 1955 was bad, so I hear, and there was a flood event during the dam construction in the late 1960's. Widespread flooding of low-lying areas and roads, levees failing, etc. The presence of the dam would seem to have mitigated some of these disasters, but unfortunately it is managed by idiots. My opinion. I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street. |
