Hi there AC. I didn't want to let your post a few days ago be forgotten. I'll break it down by number:

1. I would like to know the maximum outflow through the power station
I thought it was around 8200 with all the turbines working?


2.The lake level is rising about an foot
A day now. ( is that with maximum output?)


3. Can anyone tell if there is leaking
On the sides of the spill way
(Since you are right there)


4.I am worried if the spill way will stay in one piece if it has to be used in two months at the rate the lake is rising and the snow in the higher elevations has not started to melt.


5. Are the upper damns water levels high?

I will skip 1,2, and 5. I think others here can readily answer, or else a few searches should help you find that information. I assume for 5 you only want the upper dams that flow into O lake. It is the Upper Feather watershed that feeds the O lake.

Regarding 4- is the new spillway capable of handling a large outflow.

Two sides on this one. DWR and friends will point out this is a billion dollar plus fix, with thicker concrete, stabilized rock now underneath, lots of rebar, lots of anchors deep into the ground. It is indeed a far superior spillway than the old one.

Here is the catch. You know how a bridge can fall apart if soldiers march in step across it, from wave harmonics? The idea that constant vibrations or oscillations add up and multiply until they can shake apart even a solid bridge? This is basic physics.

So in 2019, DWR opened up the spillway and said they would run it for a certain time (two weeks? I forget). They ran it briefly and then suddenly shut it off and let the water rise to the top. There were observers at the time who thought the water patterns were showing oscillations.

A guy named Marty D'Angelo who lives below the dam somewhere (Sacramento?) had a you tube channel, and some hacker guys from MIT sent him data from internal DWR secret data sites. Marty posted it online, and the numbers apparently showed that harmonic tremors were happening. I assume the new spillway has various sensors.

The story is that Marty got a visit from the feds and had to stop....terrorists and infrastructure and all that sort of thing. The same thing happened to a GREAT twitter poster named Weiryone. He used long distance zoom cameras to take pictures of everything spillway related, including leaky gates and leaky hillside, and they shut him down for "security" reasons. But the gates leak. That doesn't mean the spillway will fail, but it does mean the gates are in bad condition. ( you can read more with a search on Dr. Robert Bea and Tony Johnson, Oroville Dam gates).

I don't know what can be done if the flow sets up tremors. Maybe out of sync pulsed air jets down the spillway? Have they put anything in? Who knows, the cameras for the spillway no longer work.

The bottom line should be- Do you trust them? Do you trust DWR and the CA govt? If the water gets up to 880 and rain or snowmelt is forecast, and they decide to open the gates, do you trust them?

The gates could fail. They are in awful condition. We dont know about the spillway for sure. Do you question the guys and data from MIT? Do you want to take a chance being on lower ground?

When things that used to be open are kept secret and hidden, usually there is something to hide.

That is when the water in the reservoir reaches the level of the bottom of the spillway gates.

Typically, that is when the gates begin leaking.

Juan Browne the clown has publicly stated that the Oroville spillway gate seals are 'metal on metal' and are 'designed to leak'. This is utter fiction.

Each gate has rubber seals on all four sides. The bottom seal is a bulb-type seal that is compressed by the weight of the gate.

Both sides and the top of each gate have inflatable seals that are pressurized using water from the reservoir.

Unfortunately, the gate structure that supports the gates has settled and racked, so the the openings the the rectangular gates occupy are no longer rectangular. This causes the gates to bind and the seals to fail.

Some repairs were supposedly completed over the past year. We'll soon know if they were effective.
