What cities are below that might be effected?

I have relatives in Chico and Sacramento.

Oroville,Thermalito and Palermo are closest. Then Biggs, Gridley, Live Oak, Yuba City , Marysville, Chico is farther north from Oroville about 3O minutes, Sac, is way further south about an hour and a half from the dam. ( I lived in Yuba City, worked in Chico, and Oroville.

They quote an official here

[link to www.kcra.com]

"About 200 to 300 feet of the spillway itself has eroded away, it's just gone. And that's of course of great concern," DWR information officer Doug Carlson said. "We could let the water flow down the spillway, and continue to erode the base of it. That's preferable to allowing the water to get too high in the dam."

So it sounds like they are reluctant to use the emergency spout.

DWR, through CHP officers on scene, that they had increased the flow to 60,000 cfs when they noticed the concrete begin to disintegrate. Officers said the hole is about 80 feet across the spillway and is about 30 feet deep.

Much worse.
What happens is the erosion around the spillway undermines the reservoir structure and the reservoir itself can start to disintegrate

To put the pictures of the spillway and it's hole into perspective the lake is currently at about 850' asl and the bottom of the spillway is about 300' asl (where the concrete channel ends above the rocks), or a 550 foot vertical drop for the water!!! Think a 45 to 50 story building in height the water is coming down!!

The pictures are obviously via a telephoto lens which makes the drop look a LOT LESS than it really is.

Thanks for that hourly link. I only had the daily one, which is posted back on p. 1 I think.

ANYWAY!!!

Damn ... that current rise is 17 FEET PER DAY!! and the big NEW rains haven't even begun to fall in the watershed yet.

Lake is currently at 858.47'. The FULL DESIGNED FLOOD Capacity Dam is 900'. (as noted above per Wikipedia FULL EMERGENCY FLOOD Capacity is 935').

With only 41.5 feet of storage capacity remaining unless they can get water going out the spillway they only have about 2 1/2 days of increasing water levels until they hit the magic 900' FULL Food Capacity Level.

More like 3/4 FOOT per hour.

While the inflow is winding down after the rain stopped this morning (still over 100,000 CFS), more rain is on the way.

The Oroville Dam is the HIGHEST DAM IN THE United States!!

It is a rock filled dam that is 770' high
