DWR, through CHP officers on scene, that they had increased the flow to 60,000 cfs when they noticed the concrete begin to disintegrate. Officers said the hole is about 80 feet across the spillway and is about 30 feet deep. [ link to www.krcrtv.com] To put the pictures of the spillway and it's hole into perspective the lake is currently at about 850' asl and the bottom of the spillway is about 300' asl (where the concrete channel ends above the rocks), or a 550 foot vertical drop for the water!!! Think a 45 to 50 story building in height the water is coming down!! The pictures are obviously via a telephoto lens which makes the drop look a LOT LESS than it really is. Yeah, although I've never seen it in use, I was captivated by the sheer magnitude of it driving by it in the summer...
