Holy SHIT! My new Sigma Metalytic Precious Metal Verifier helped me spot counterfeit gold bars I bought from APMEX

I would have thought APMEX would be using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer to spot this kind of garbage

Just imagine what's inside those gold bars in Ft Knox and The Fed Reserve Bank of NY

My 1 oz bars all tested .999+. My 2 oz Skull & Bones bar tested negative for gold, but when the analyzer was calibrated for pre-1900 US coin 90% silver the bar tested positive. The fucks at Prospector's Gold and Gems are gold-plating their 2 oz silver bars and selling them as gold.

Big bars definitely can be. Tungsten is right next to gold on the periodic table and the density is almost the same. I would never buy a large bar. Turns out you can't even trust a 2 oz bar from APMEX

Wouldn't be investing in gold unless you have a metal analyzer of some sort that checks the inside

Edit: the machine will say its silver when it is not..

So the machine is not perfect and should not be used as your only means of testing

The thing uses a magnetic field to check the metal conductivity. Silver bars that are .999+ and gold bars that were .999+ all tested normal. However, the 2 oz bar made by Prospector's Gold & Gems tested negative for gold and positive for 90% silver

But feel free to go buy one of those 2 oz bars. Who am I but a stupid ass?

Bah, I think you're dosing, silver has a density of 10.49 g/cm^3 and gold has a density of 19.30 g/cm^2

Or, silver is 1/2 as dense as gold so it would never work, just weigh the bars and check their volume.

It's possible it's tungsten that has a density of 19.25 g/cm^3

Okay, Archimedes. I'll let you displace some water with your gold pieces and precisely calculate the volume so you can measure the density.

Geez with a bar you can just use a micrometer, measure the dimensions and multiply to find the volume, then the mass, then weight it with a gram scale accurate to 1/100th a gram.

Size and weight...no other metal has the desity(wieght x size) of gold.

Take a pic of your gold bar on the versifier. You only posted a stock photo of the machine. AMPEX can sue you for such claims.
