US Deploys WC-135 Nuclear Sniffer Aircraft to UK - Europe-Wide Radioactive Iodine -131 detected by ground stations.

Radioactive Iodine-131, a radionuclide of anthropogenic (man-made) origin, has recently been detected in tiny amounts in the ground-level atmosphere in Europe.

The preliminary report states it was first found during week 2 of January 2017 in northern Norway. Iodine-131 was also detected in Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France and Spain, until the end of January.

radioactive isotope present in nuclear fission products, and was a significant contributor to the health hazards from open-air atomic bomb testing in the 1950s, and from the Chernobyl disaster, as well as being a large fraction of the contamination hazard in the first weeks in the Fukushima nuclear crisis. This is because I-131 is a major fission product of uranium and plutonium, comprising nearly 3% of the total products of fission (by weight).
