You can check your home network for some of these exploits.

You need an old laptop and a network hub - not a switch.

Load the laptop with Kali Linux, the appropriate flavor for the CPU you have - x32 or x64. Or you could just download Wireshark for Windows.

Then connect the hub between the cable modem and your WiFi router/switch (home-use routers are also switches).

Run a one-way Ethernet cable from the hub to your monitoring computer. This prevents the monitoring computer from sending packets or being detected on your internal net.

Start up Wireshark in Windows or Linux. Set the capture to the Ethernet port in Promiscuous Mode. Turn off all networked devices in the house (but not your router, hub, or cable modem). Watch the packets, and in time you will be able to determine what is normal machine chatter and what is anomalous encrypted TCP/IP packets. You then can filter out the machine chatter with capture rules in Wireshark.

You may want to let the sniffer run all night to get a good capture.

You can also sniff WiFi packets with Wireshark or Aircrack-ng, Airmon-ng, and Airodump (linux). Need to have a WiFi adapter that can do promiscuous mode.

For advanced users, you can use Security Onion with SNORT loaded up on a monitoring laptop.

These come as Linux distribution iso's. Free.

One way to tell if your cell phone is "talking back home" is to turn it off. Place it next to computer external speakers - the closer to the speaker's amplifier, the better.

If the cell broadcasts when off, a noise will be heard in the speakers. It's like a low-frequency pulse lasting less than a second to several seconds.

The average users here is more likely to contract a virus or malware, and good preventive measures are all that are needed.

Don't open files from sources you don't trust or from sources you trust, but that you are not expecting a file from. I.e Mom sends you a random .pdf or Microsoft document.

Don't allow macros in Office files

Don't visit link hyperlinks sent to you in an email.

Don't accept 3rd party SSL certs.

Keep your AV and Anti Malware up to date.

Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not in use.

Use 3rd party VPNs such as Cloak or Betternet.

With a snooping budget of an estimated $100 Billion over sevaral years, I would suspect the VPN companies are working for the enemy.
