By mainstream I mean full support for graphics cards/sound drivers.etc so you can have 5.1 surround sound or support for your graphics card for high quality gaming.

How about official ways to play your old 16/32 bit software not just games but serious software too that doesn't work on new OS.

Sure you can emulate some Windows softare but there is no guarantee of results and you have to go thru a rigmarole to even reach that stage.

WINE requires at least 6 different steps before you can actually test anything. Keywords *Test* doesn't mean your product won't have really annoying or funny glitches.

You can pay to use Play On Linux to eliminate doing those 6 different things but still don't know about actual results.

Some functions on Linux Mint that you can do on Windows can be done manually thru Terminal but that requires a year of learning which Linux coding books actually exist!.

I have one but most people are not going to spend a year or two learning code going back to Win 3.1 days.

Actually Win 3.1 was pretty simple commands once you memorize them down and you had a lot more control over functions then you do over any Windows OS past Win XP SP3 update.

(Was there ever a SP4 or was that a fan thing?)

Funny you ask, Im downloading Mint MATE 64k right now. Just tried xFCE and it blows. Mint blows windows 7 away !!!! Lighter, faster and no security bs everytime you search the web. Easier to install than windows also and great driver support. You do need a little background but since Ive been a UNIX tech since 83, that's no problem. It wont be long before systems start shipping with Linux; hell Android is Linux im told.

How long? A long time. because Linux still is ages behind Linux. The gaming scene on Linux is absolute trash. Do you want to play TuxCart? Fuck no. I want to play Gta 5 and Far Cry 4 and Fallout 4 and Witcher 3. Not a game that looks like it was made 10 years ago.

& Linux doesn't work out of the box, as they say. You usually have to mess around and tweak shit to get basic things to work.

Using a command line to make programs work?
ON Windows they just work. You don't fuck around.

Linux also looks ugly and unpolished.

Sure if you have an old computer that only has windows 2000 on it, sure make the upgrade.

But Windows 10 crushes Linux in every way. Except maybe privacy. But who gives a fuck? They can spy on me, I'm not hiding anything.

And for the idiots who whine about viruses why do I get no viruses on my Windows 10 Gaming Machine? Don't download random porn and other shit off the internet and you don't know and you won't have a problem.

In what way is Linux better than Windows? Besides it will run on shitty machine?

A long time. Windows will reign supreme until developers stop making gaming solely on directx. That will never happen as microsoft will take action to protect their product from being obsolete.

Wine doesn't work half the time and Gog has a shitty selection. It doesn't feature the newest, best games.

You shouldn't need to set up your hardware and fool around with settings.. On Windows it just works.

Why would someone bother wasting time playing around with command lines and tech forums to get basic things done on their computer, that Windows was able to do flawlessly already.

My Windows system has been Virus free.

My Windows system has Absolutely no problems running any game or program I want to run. Linux? nothing but problems.

I had a Windows 10 System. Switched to Linux for about 6 months to test and compare it. Linux is NOT worth the switch (at least right now) .

Sure I guess it's free so you can't complain too much but so is Windows 10. If you have any computer knowledge at all you can locate the Windows 10 iso file for free.

Save yourself the time and effort.

in the real world a popular piece of advice to fix windows problems is "wipe your hard disk and reinstall windows and all your other software".

Linux is sooo far ahead of windows it's not even funny. Windows 10 is so annoying and slow I can't bear to log into it. The worst is the fact that now it just randomly reboots and takes forever to load up another massive security fix.

Linux plays most of my games flawlessly. Civilization 5, Divinity original sin, every Valve game, Age of Wonders 3, Pillars of Eternity, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor and many many more.

Through Gog I can even run old dos games like heroes 3. There are no windows software titles I need that do not have better counterparts on linux, and it's so much easier to install software on linux and know that it's going to work, thanks to standard software repositories.

The only thing exclusive to windows right now are some software by the increasingly irrelevant adobe, and voice recognition software.

"How long would Windows last if Linux Mint became mainstream?"

This is actually an illogical question.
It is Linux that is holding Linux back from being mainstream.

The inherent inferiority of the user experience with Linux is what holds it back.
Your question is like asking, how long would cars last if the horse and carriage were better?

Don't get me wrong.
I've been hoping that Linux would go mainstream. However, repeatedly I have to face the fact that Linux is a fucking pain in the ass to deal with, even Ubuntu.

Despite that, I like Linux and have been using Linux for a decade.
Out of the entirety of my friends and family, I am the one who is the most technologically savvy, by far.

And, I am the only one who makes the effort to use Linux.
No one else even has a clue what Linux is or that there is such a thing called Linux. They are all everyday kind of people and they know literally nothing of this thing called Linux.

How in the world can Linux ever expect to go mainstream?

I don't like windows 10 for the simple fact they force you to have automatic updates that can screw up your system and it has happened to users and this constant sending of info out hogging your internet connection and interfering with your work with nagging updates. That is not a friendly operating system when it spies on you to serve up ads to you. Plus you can't really shut off the spying. It continues to spy on you and send data even when you turn things off. Windows 10 would have been a nice operating system if it didn't spy on you constantly and force updates on you.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73503239

Support for linux games is ever increasing. I actually believe windows days are numbered. Most people are using linux or BSD now anyway in the form of android, Mac and ios.

A lot of new titles start on linux. For example Hitman, Ark Survival evolved, Total War Warhammer, and a lot more...

I'm so glad I rarely boot into that horrific mess known as windows. It's linux mint for me. Microsoft just wants to control everything , yet even their default settings make no sense. Also don't forget their default settings essentially make them an NSA node collecting information for the oligarchy.

This is all true.

The best you can do is make the effort to turn everything that you can off, and uninstall every app and trial program you can find (that you do not use).

Turn off sharing, turn off app updates, turn off coriander or whatever her name is, then look through all of your settings menus and turn off, off, off.

I have had to roll back updates that screwed up my windows 10 machine, just like you say.

It's maddening at times.

Windows 10 behaves like malware and the awful thing is almost all the computers sold in retail stores has that awful malware installed. They don't give consumers a choice. If you want Linux or some other operating system you have to install it yourself and take the time to screw around and try and get things right. Consumers should be offered more choice in terms of operating systems. Microsoft has a retail monopoly that needs to be broken.

various tasks on windows also require using the command line

if wine is too difficult for you to use, go to gog.com and get some games that run natively on linux. even steam sells games that run on linux. try playing those.

This is why Linux will never be mainstream.

All the Linux nerds in the world cannot come up with a simple, default install procedure for Linux, with the option to do a custom install for the experts. This is not acceptable for an OS which yearns to become the desktop of choice.

Most computer users don't want to mess around, they want to do what they bought the computer to do in the first place.

The arrogance and condescension of many Linux users on forums is a real turn off. If they are so scornful of novice users they should stay on the pro forums. The lack of professionalism is resounding.

Users of severely limited computer skills can (given no security issues) use Windows, backup Windows, hook up to a Windows VPN, install new software, etc.

For all the scorn for Windows, the fact is that the same is not true for Linux.

This is why, despite massive security risks many Windows users play a daily game of security Russian roulette just to use their computers without having to design the damned thing from the ground up.

I love Mint. I would use it all the time if it wasn't like pulling teeth to get a simple application installed.

Linux can't have it both ways, they are either going to go with offering a decent interface that covers standard computing operations or they are going to stay marginalized.

Edit to add:
Most Windows users never use the command line. In fact probably don't even know what it is.

Everything you posted is completely inaccurate and if you can't install software on Linux Mint (?!?) (especially the Ubuntu based one) then you need to go to your local toy store and get one of those fisher-price computers for 2 year olds. I know seniors that can't operate their TV consistently that are using Linux Mint on a daily basis with no problems.

Enjoy your Windows machine and quit worrying about it. Nobody is begging you to use Linux anyways.

opengl is improving more and more and now with vulcan they are close to directx preformance. more and more games are released on cross platform.

but microsoft is 100% paying people off to make games only for windows.

still operating systems are only tools. i understand people like most of you only do web browsing and nothing more rly.

windows is good for many things as is linux. mac is great too

We do not learn from history because our studies are brief and prejudiced. In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be:
The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence.
Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty.
The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires
We are at the end of the Age of Decadence heading into COLLAPSE
