It removes a toxic element in the plant Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73642515 yeah, this is the notion that people have of the subject despite being otherwise untrue. Boiling only leeches out the beneficial tannins (which may be mildly laxative for some sensitive people)/sterols and minerals in this case...at that, a person would likely end up eating two or three times more of the "boiled down" concoction than they would raw, rinsed leaves which, IDK, could just as likely be troubleseome as far as any "toxicity" goes (which is practically none). |

The otherwise obnoxious "weed" brought by early settlers for its (then established) use as food/medicine/homesickness relief is only a few degrees seperated from leaf lettuce as far as Asterid taxonomy goes and is best prepared accordingly, while surpassing brussel sprouts in nutrional value and taste imo. Their perennial taproots are as good as any root vegetable going into spring and summer (they get slightly bitter and exude a milky "latex" when cut come early autumn though are also at their most nutritious). Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73178132 tldr: drown with ranch or sour cream and it's all good I'll have to let big momma (the head hen around here) and the other black ladies around here know they've been eating Dandelion greens wrong all their lives. FYI: they only eat the young yellowish center leaves and the root is made into a tincture and wine, outer leaves are fed to the rabbits. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 73178132 Canada 03/27/2017 11:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Pretty much the only instance where you'd deal with visibly "dirty" leaves would be if they we're covered in yestersday's grass clippings (or DOG TURDS) or something... Again, through the process of picking and washing them off yourself you'll be personally choosing and ending up with "choice" greens. you think a combine harvester sorts all the bugs, bird shit and dead mice from the glyphosated crops it gathers before getting further milled and stamped into a mcgriddle bun? Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 73178132 Canada 03/27/2017 11:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have read that they are less bitter if you pick them in the spring, and get more bitter as the weather heats up. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70557500 If you keep picking at them as they come out then new leaves won't have time to get bitter. Sun exposure has a lot to do with this. Dandelions growing in shadier areas aren't as subject to this compared to open-field ones and will also often produce significantly larger leaves to compensate for the lower light levels (to the point of not flowering if the encroaching shade doesn't otherwise recede). |

If you buy from the store you are getting a big load of toxic chemical, which is also to be avoided. Just wash your veggies in water in the sink before putting them in your mouth. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

I've seen some unbelievable cr*p on here, but c'mon, lol. On topic, try them for yourselves, they're actually pretty good, cheap too! And you can eat them raw if you like, but avoid picking them near busy roads - the exhaust residue doesn't enhance the flavour. |
