I started out on that machine. Still remember it well

We had an Atari 2600,
Then I bought a Magnavox Odyssey II. I remember KC Munchman and they had a great adventure game.

First computer I ever typed a program into was a Trash 80 Color Computer w 4K ram.

First computer I owned was a TI 99/4a. I had everything for it, and wound up selling it after the machine was orphaned for a couple years. I had the expansion box, speech synthesizer, dual floppies, and all my first programs in it- some of which were very complex. I'll always be sorry I sold it.

Had a job between Junior and Senior years in high school programming dBase II in MP/M (multiuser CP/M)

Owned an Atari 520st and an Apple IIc.

The Atari had great graphics but was broken a lot, and wound up selling both of them.

Owned a Kaypro Model 10 that I inherited from a boss who passed away. Their version of Pac Mac consisted of the letter C alternating between upper and lower case, eating periods in a maze consisting of plus symbols, minus signs, and pipe characters. Actually, it was a fast and playable game.

First PC I owned was an AT class lunchbox portable that I had built. Nice machine, and, kept upgrading it and down the line into various PC's, and now have a PC and two MacBook Pro's.

I have some retro Arcade games, and recently restored a full size Ikari Warriors game.

Dropped out of college in 1989 and didn't finish a night program, but, I've had great jobs and been either working for someone, had a side business, or my own company, which is 18 years old now, with 13 employees.

These early machines were our education. The TI that my Dad bought me was the cheapest college tuition he could have provided. He said recently that he should have bought two of them. I bought my brother's half share of the computer from him. Lol.

I had a TI-99/4A, it was a lot of fun. But I must admit I was a little jealous of the huge collection of Commodore 64 games my friend had. Looking back, a lot of them were junk but the latest games usually looked and played as good as or better than the other systems at the time. There was an active underground community spreading the games around. It was the undisputed king of home gaming PC's at one point imo.

Yeah the Commode 64 had great games. I thought the TI was easier to code for with all the peeks and pokes with the Commode.

The TI won the looks department though, when you had a loaded peripheral expansion box and were running an active program on it, it was great to watch the blinking lights.

I wound up writing some BBS software on the TI. The funny thing back then was getting graphics to display on a message board. Wound up writing some encoding software that let people draw pictures and then encode them for the BBS. Fun stuff.

The commodore 64 was actually more advanced than our "modern" computers those days in many ways.

All you had to do was to switch on the power and in a few seconds you would be presented with an operating system.
An operating system which could not be overwritten by a virus as it was on a ROM.

No fans making noise. Low power consumption.


This is where modern computers should have built on. A personal computer should consume 20 watt max instead of the 1000w gaming PCs some have now.

Fortunately we seem to be moving away from that soon. The new personal computers will be smartphones as microsoft already has hinted towards with their 950 and 950xl lumia series, giving you a desktop experience with their docking station for the 950/950xl lumia, allowing you to connect the smartphone to any monitor and use it as a desktop.

The smartphone itself consumes around 15w when on load, and makes no noise while operating.

Unfortunately it is only good for some browsing, email etc and other basic stuff, as it cannot really run any real windows apps, but it is already showing the way.


We will probably see similar devices for android and ios soon. M$ having a tiny market share in the smartphone market might hit them pretty bad in the future, as the future will be smartphones that can also act as a desktop.
Windows may become a thing of the past, which might not necessarily be a bad thing after all, with all the spying they have built right into it and their forceful automatic updates you cannot turn off.

The CRT or TVs on these Computers used a ton more electricity, not to mention that the processing power. Now I can load a program in less than 15 seconds compared to 2 hours to tape load a sucky game. You haven't a clue on power consumption vs computing time vs man hours wasted. Get out of here with such ridiculousness.

The first Commodore I had, did not have a tape hooked to it. It had a place in the back of it for the tapes, already programmed. I was replaced by the one where you could get things like tape decks or, five inch floppy drive, that where people bought coding books to make their own games.

Good learning tool, it was not long after, We bought an IBM Ativa and I still have the disk that came with it, 3.1 and it got on the internet, back then there was not much on the internet except, groups who are still the same now. I was on a few, I liked researching much more. Everything was open and it was not a bit of money passing hands, There were pictures and one or a small group that played games. Commercialization messed it all up!

A part from the emulators I use on my Wii, to play C64 games, I also have a couple of plug and play joysticks with in built games that are a hoot.

Even comes up with the blue greeting screen and 'loads'.

I am talking concepts and you are comparing computing speed of computers over 20 years ago, to computing speed of today's computers or power consumption of an old TV to a modern monitor.

Pushing the hardware to the limits those days and giving end users access to 500-1000w consuming PCs is a travesty. Where does it stop?
Should everyone own a 1 megawatt supercomputer if it was affordable independent of what this would mean for the environment?


Why not limit it to 20w-50w max? Do we really have to go to the limits or cannot we just wait a few years longer until new technology allows for faster computing speeds at the same power consumption?
Just the fans in a gaming computer consume that much, let alone the noise they produce(noise makes people stupid btw), plus a fan costs resources to manufacture and creates more garbage. Additionally dust is pulled into the case which can kill your components along with the fan.

Fanless, noiseless, dust free, low power computers will be the future and smartphones is what will get us there.

I still remember learning the machine code and, later, using assembler to write lightning fast code. After BASIC it was just mind-blowing to be able to change the color of the screen borders in the middle of the screen refersh. And smooth scrolling only part of the screen... now that was a trick.

Thanks for that. Too much! Reminded me of my freshman year at (community) college, couldn't afford much more higher learning then, yet. It was very advanced, though, for 1983. Our computer lab had all Apple II-e's and that is where I studied "Advanced Electronic Visuals". We learned by plotting ea. graph to create works of art/graphics. It was ultra slow & daunting but we got through it. This video is so amazingly accurate of the times then, the computer labs, how they started & the different types of people we were.

Ok. That's just too perverse for me...
