Precious video, i had seen it already, am also a big fan of the show back in the day, the b&w original series.

Few people know that there is a conspiracy connection between this show & the JFK assassination: WML's ACE player, who would sleuth & guess a great many of the show's guests, and their 'lines', their occupations - was Dorothy Kilgallen. She was an amazing investigative reporter who ALMOST broke the story of who killed JFK - that is until they OFFED her first! It was an awful event when Dorothy was MURDERED by the shadow gov't. Someone FINALLY wrote a full book about it, I hope they make it into a movie.

The Tandy computer from radio shack was the first computer I actually HAD to learn on, in school, 1979. I had played on a University computer with my dad as early as 1976 as a pre-teen like you were. It played checkers and told fortunes, lol. I didn't see a 'color' Tandy until 1993, i believe with 150mhz ram.

My first computer I bought used off a fellow airman for $200. It was a 286 with a switch in the back for 4 or 6 MHz. It had a 20 or 40 mb 'hardcard' (hard drive on an 8 bit ISA expansion card) and a VGA card. It already had Red Baro n, Prince of Persia, Sim City, and Leisure Suit Larry on it. I lost all that temporarily when I got the 'stoned' virus. Good times.

Here's another example of MIDI (and related tech.) This is a guitar synthesizer with and guitar controller which is an actual, "real" electric guitar. You can additionally connect it up to special synthesizers which are driven by a special pickup (in addition to it's humbuckers). They lock on to the string vibrations and signal the synth to generate sound which is (optionally) mixed with the adjustable guitar tone. Internal MIDI conversion generates a signal that can drive other external devices (in realtime) from this...in 1980**

i still love midis. you have to find good ones.. i have a keylight keyboard that lights up and also does the drum tracks to any song you want if you can find it... not a toy

throw it into a sequencer program?.. oh boy... amplifier and speakers through a sound desk?.. instant studio....

I thought 'midi' 's were the products of the simple musical keyboard Commodore & C64 had and we would use regular keys for the notes.. End product was called a 'midi' file, or perhaps my memory is askew at the moment.

I don't know a lot about the C64's MIDI implementation, but I do know that the SID chips for the sound generation have a rather cult following, and are still very popular. There are entire styles of glitch music and other shit using them.

What most people incorrectly equate MIDI to is usually just low quality sound samples and sound generators...and very badly created music files. :)

People saying "Midi" with Commodore 64, I think the word they're looking for is "SID" as in the SID chip.

The SID chip was revolutionary synth chip with multiple voices that was unique to the commodore 64 at the time, including the ability to synth human voice to a certain degree of success.

Therefore, the C64 was somewhat known for it's more complex computer compositions like the Archon theme, for example, or the soundtrack for the Ghostbusters game.

MIDI encompassed a few other areas, one of them quite badly... Some vendors would utilize the System Exclusive functions. Even device firmware and operating system upgrades could be loaded via a MIDI connection, or as a MIDI file. There was also a (kind of shitty, and hardly supported) Sample Dump Standard for saving and loading samples over MIDI, but the cables supported such a low bandwidth that even loading from floppies was superior...if you can imagine that...

The SID chip was packaged into a few hardware synths, with the flagship product probably being the Elektron SIDstation.

I mentioned it a whiles back, but you guys know that you can emulate the C64? Yeah?

Quite a few out there, and tonnes of roms to dl.

I prefer to have them on my Wii, and you still need to pull up the keyboard to load stuff, all be it a virtual blue screen.

Was playing Jumpman Jnr just a minute ago. I still love Gateway to Apshai, regardless of how bad the graphics and monsters are.

Same goes for Defender of the Crown. But annoyingly, the emulator is true to form, and half way through, you have to 'flip the disc' to load the rest of the program!
(never did work out how to joust....)

There is a guy that wrote his own operating system and he used the C64 OS as the basic template, so to speak. There are a few differences...

A lot of people make fun of that guy, but what he did to design his own operating system, file system, programming language, and applications is nothing short of impressive.

There's one old project called "Big Mess O' Wires" where a guy basically built his own computer as well...mostly out of just wire wraps!
