Is Colombia safe for backpackers? Two 23 year old blonde girls specifically.

They have something there called "devil's dust" - comes from a tree I believe. Someone passing you can blow some on you with a simple hand to the mouth coughing gesture and it acts as a date rape drug. You function normally but your right/wrong brain function is impaired. They can also use it to get you to give them your valuables or to get you to withdraw money from your bank or ATM. The CIA has been using it since the 60's, can't remember the technical name for it.

I would REALLY think hard about two big guys walking around in the interior of the country alone, never mind two pretty blonde girls.
That said, backpackers are all over the countrysides now, even touring small working cocaine processing sites.
Travel in a pack, including someone local like a fixer/guide/translator.

The cities are pretty much safe now, but there are sneak thieves and misdirection thefts like there are in every large city in Europe and South America.

I've been to Cartagena, Cali, Bogota, and Barranquilla with no problems, but I never felt "safe" and I've seen tourists have problems with theft and street money changers etc.
But I don't feel safe in American cities like Miami or Chicago either, so . . . .
