Wow if I saw that picture on the internet I would immediately assume it was fake. That looks a lot longer than 15 feet!

Why did they need to kill it?

Used to love going back into Big Cypress Swamp.

Go to Miami, ask for directions to Tamiami Trail, then head west.

So they find an amazing specimen from the alligator family and kill it? It sounds so bizarre to brag about spotting a 100year old alligator that grew into a giant only to kill it.... I understand that gator populations needs to be controlled via limiting the numbers but to kill an amazing gator like that just seems foolish.

They should not have killed it unless they had to.

I do not know the full story here but unless I had to I would have let such a noble creature go free.

To put this into perspective, I fished on my Grandfather's lake when I was kid. When I was 9 years old I caught the biggest bass I have ever reeled in (even till this day).

I was quite proud of myself; however, my grandfather threw it back after we quickly weighed it, measured it, and took a quick photo of me with it.

Why did he throw such a large fish his grandson just caught back in the lake ? (I was pretty damn pissed off and even more so after he never explained himself for doing what he did).

All he would say is that I would one day appreciate what he made me do when I am older.

Well, as the months and years went on I caught a few other bass in that lake but nothing near that size although I would still occasionally see (what I believe to be at least) the same bass swimming around the dock in the months and years later, which told me he was still alive and swimming (and no, no one else caught that fish. It was a private lake accessible through only his property. In all my years fishing there I NEVER saw anyone on that lake but me)

I then realized why he wanted me to throw it back. It was out of respect for an elder creature but also admiration for such a being that was able to survive and thrive for as long as he did and in doing so, that animal earned the right to go out on his own terms.

And with that, I bring the story to a close.

Well, I live in Florida and not all of us are the same.

Oh, yeah. Here is a post script to this story.

I caught (2) smaller bass + a brimm a few weeks later. He promised me he would have one of them taken to a taxidermist, stuffed, and mounted as a trophy I could put on a wall.

However, I never asked him which one would be mounted and which ones would end up as lunch.

Well, the joke was on me as the (2) smaller bass became sandwiches and the teeny, tiny (but feisty) brimm ended up on a plaque, which became kind of a joke in the house.

Other kids had a large fish mounted to the wall, Arthur had a little brimm.

Then again, I think money had a lot to do with it to. Years later I had to have the old brimm fixed and wouldn't you know it that it was the actual, real fish, scales and all that he had mounted and stuffed - it was NOT a mold or a re-creation of the original fish.

My GF must have paid a pretty penny and the bass would have set him back even more so I understand why he chose the brimm to be put on a wood board...
