I don't think the airstrikes are as serious a threat to Assad as we are led to believe. For one, the airstrip is still useable. For two, watch to see if they actually go after Assad personally. Don't panic until the Russians do something aggressive.

In 2013 or so, I had a Christian Syrian student in a class. She told me the same thing. She said Assad wasn't necessarily the best person, but he did leave the Christians in peace. Not so the rebels. She said it was a known fact in Syria that it was the rebels staging the chemical attacks (with US help) to make it look like Assad was responsible.

She eventually was able to bring her mother to the US but it was extremely difficult.
