Does anyone know the difference between Publix and Winn-Dixie?
I'm confused.

I've gone into a new Publix twice. Both times it looked like a Winn-Dixie to me. I'm thoroughly confused in there and doubt that I'll go back, even though it's closer.

I think Southerners can relate to this?

Never been to Publix and the closest Winn-Dixie was bought out years ago.

eh - they're both here, winn-dixie uses 'cards' for the best price.
publix does not. other than that - dunno.

Thanks, MO. I'm not sure what to think. I think I'll go to the old one until they tear that down, too.

I wish.

I just know that this is a good way to get some input.

People are relatively candid about these sort of things here.

Which is good.

I dunno. I guess the size of it is more what I have a problem with.

I'll drive a few more miles and avoid the store that is too huge to find anything in. I'm not a shopper.

Re: Does anyone know the difference between Publix and Winn-Dixie?
Publix has better service, better stuff, and higher prices. WD has less than great service, sometimes they do not turn over stuff fast enough, and the prices are lower. WD has been note ot have good meats but maybe that has changed. Walmart has kicked WD's butt because they were in the same market but PUblix has not been effected by Walmart since they are more upscale. Im in jacksonville, where WD is headquartered and there are lots of Publix and Walmart stores here as well...

Holy Cow, Batman!

You sound like maybe you know.

I just don't like Winn Dixie. I have a mental block against it for some reason.

Oh, and by the way, I refuse to enter Walmart.

Rock on AC, thanks for the info.

 Quoting: C. 200519

Nope... not all of them. There are two I know of in Denton, TX. They are like the real old school supermarkets I remember when I was a kid. There is something rather unstable about buying pork chops from a store with a cartoon pig mascot.

When I was a teenager I bagged groceries at a Winn-Dixie in a small Oklahoma town. This is rather moronic but I used find it so amusing that the Winn-Dixie slogan at the time "The Beef People"... and then I thought since I was an employee then that made me a Beef Person. Ha! Yeah, I know; I'm a moron... but funny to a zit faced 16 year trying to figure out how to score some beer and checking out girls in the produce section.

Publix is the store full of shoppers. Winn Dixie is the one where you have the aisles all to yourself, and they still take forever to check you out.

Ugh. It's a marketing thing. Stores are arranged in a manner that forces people to go through the most stuff to get what they are really after, so stores will mirror each other.

I would tend to think Piggly Wiggly's would be in backwaters but Denton, TX is on the northern end of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex; has close to 100,000 population in it's own right and has 2 universities. So it's not your typical backwater, one stop sign town that I would tend to think of when thinking of Piggly Wiggly.

We don't have any Publix around here. We do have Kroger, WalMart, Tom Thumb and Albertson's. I generally prefer Kroger. Don't know why... they just seem the best.

What? No Brookshires?

Oh I forgot...Denton is too big to have a Brookshires.

BTW, Winn Dixie is only in Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. They've shrunk considerably over the years. There used to be Winn Dixie stores in Texas.

Publix is in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.

As for store cleanliness...in Savannah, GA that is, the sole Publix and the newer Kroger were probably the best. The other stores were rather shabby.

Oh, you're right. We used to have a Winn Dixie but Brookshire's bought them out. So we have a Brookshire's but I've never been in it. I forgot they just built a big Super Target next to the big Wal-Mart Supercenter. Plus, like I said we have the two ancient Piggly Wiggly's. Walking into those stores is like something from the 1950's or something. They are pretty tiny and they just smell kind of weird, y'know. Kind of like how church has a certain smell... well, Piggly Wiggly's smell like grocery store. The Kroger's and Target's and etc. don't have that smell.

Re: Does anyone know the difference between Publix and Winn-Dixie?
If anyone cares, here's my personal ranking of grocery stores within 10 miles of my home:

1. Kroger (there are 2 new Signature Kroger's in Denton. Both real nice; wide aisles; clean; awesome selection of strange and unique items)

2. Albertson's (I don't really like it that much but it's a couple miles closer)

3. Super Target (it's a brand new store and the weird ass neon everywhere almost sends me into acid flashbacks when I go there. Go for the groceries; stay for the psychadelia)

4. Piggly Wiggly - it's weird but better than the hell that is Wal Mart Supercenter.

5. Tom Thumb - there actually isn't a Tom Thumb in Denton propoer but there is one a few miles away on my way to work. These people freak me out because after they take my debit card they always address me by my name. "Have a great day, Mr. X!" Bastards.

6. Wal-Mart Supercenter - There is so much wrong with WalMart but not even dealing with their corporate philosophy this place just sucks. Everytime you go there the big ass parking lot is totally full, the aisles are way too narrow and there is always some asshole stopped right in front of you blocking the entire aisle. They have no real butchers, all of the meat is prepackaged and most of the time I think it smells a bit weird. Double negative thumbs down.

This concludes Terrier's guide to grocery shopping near Denton, TX.

Publix cleans their floors.

I thought Winn Dixie went into bankruptcy and went out of business a few years ago. The certainly closed a lot of stores.
