Reinforcing the walls/building a bomb shelter in my basement, any tips?
If I were to do this, what would be the best course of action?

Should I build an entire new layer of wall, or just build a smaller structure inside?

How could I go about doing it on the cheap, yet still effective? Any tips would be great.

I hope your house isn't made of wood or what you're building is your very own personal dutch oven.

Rent a small excavator from homedepot, go 20-30 feet away from your house in the rear yard and measure out a 30 x50 plot and start digging it out to around 10-14 feet in depth, go to the local shipyard and procure 2 cargo containers and drop them into the hole you have created and begin welding them together. figure out the reinforcement, shielding, air handler system and entry exits your self.

I've seen projects like that, and although I feel it'd be optimal, I just don't have the ability todo that.

1. Cargo containers aren't meant to be buried, they are designed to only take loads at the stack points.

2. Digging a hole in the backyard is going to attract attention - from neighbors, from code enforcement, from neighbors calling code enforcement. People suck and then they'll expect you to save them.

Building a structure in a basement sidesteps all of this drama. There are Civil Defense pdfs from the Cold War that demonstrate how to build a 'bar' out of brick with a ceiling that drops onto the bar and gets mass stacked on it to provide protection. And your booze is right where you'll need it for getting a two to four week drunk on.

My basement actually has a stash spot in the floor built during prohibition.

I won't link it because I never know what will get me 'unmembershipped' but if you put Home Fallout Shelter Snack Bar Basement Location Plan D into a search engine you should find it right away.

There's all kinds of houses around here that have Prohibition additions. One converted carriage house was a speakeasy and has an observation window in the ceiling where the boss could keep an eye on what was going on.

You have to be 1000 feet below surface to avoid nuclear war death. Then you need to live there for over 20 years.

you do not need miles of thick lead to shield out gamma even 10cm of shielding should be enough. not having any though would be a bogus move.
Just my thoughts.
