Arab League refutes Israeli reports on using Arab airspace against Iran

CAIRO, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa said Sunday he made intensive contacts with the foreign ministers of Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates on reports that their countries granted Israeli warplanes access to their airspace to attack Iran.

The contacts proved that the reports, carried by Israeli daily Haaretz Sunday, were "groundless" and had "no grain of truth," Moussa told reporters.

The three ministers ruled out the possibility of using the airspace of their countries against Iran at present or the future as Iran was "a neighborly sisterly country," he pointed out.

Some Arab countries and Iran started a dialogue on the possibility of launching a mechanism for cooperation based on understanding and common interests, the Arab League chief disclosed.

Asked about the seven-party meeting hosted by Islamabad, capital of Pakistan Sunday, Moussa said there are no Sunni anti-Iran axes.

The one-day consultative meeting of the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Saudi Arab, Turkey, Malaysia, Jordan and Egypt besides Pakistan aimed to lobby support from the Muslim world for the Arab peace initiative, he made clear.

There are differing views among the Arab countries neither on the initiative nor on support for the coming Palestinian national unity government, Moussa added. (end) mfm.bna.gb.
