When I first saw this one I thought: Aha! No, that doesn't mean a "scalar weapon" disintegrated it. Rockets are not designed to fly at extreme angles of attack; aerodynamic forces will quickly rip a rocket apart if it deviates too much from the correct attitude. Whose ever it was, it looked like the nose disentegrated before impact. WTF? Was it made out of wood and paper machete ? That's actually the same thing that ultimately ripped apart both Challenger and Columbia; the orbiter was ripped apart when it turned sideways into the local air stream. In the case of Challenger, this happened immediately after the external tank disintegrated. In the case of Columbia it happened after the autopilot and the RCS could no longer fight the increasing drag of the disintegrating port wing, resulting in loss of attitude control and its breakup due to a combination of aerodynamic forces and heating. This is especially true for the joints between various elements of the rocket (payload fairing, various stages, side-mounted fuel tanks, etc), which is where the structural failure starts as the rocket starts to break up in mid-air. Watch what happens at 2 minutes in this video: Rocket loses attitude control, starts pitching and the payload rips off the rocket. The ultimate explosion was initiated by the range safety system (self-destruct if the rocket goes off-course).  |
