Thinking about getting a Roku. Is it worth it? - Nevermind. Firestick it is.
We cut the cord a few years ago and have been using Youtube, Netflix, and Hulu since.

Just wondering if Roku is worth bothering with. Does it stream live content for free or is everything subscription based? Of what it does stream is it anything other than b list old movies?

Roku has been great... been using it for 5 years with very few issues.

thinking about moving to a plex setup, and cutting the cords to all the streaming services.

I think it's worth it. Has a lot of free stuff as well as rent or own.

When you create a Roku account...from their web page, you can add channels you want to watch. half are sub...but there's a LOT of free channels too.

I've got a couple roku boxes I use for plex. My internet is too slow to stream reliably so I usually just stream movies off my server.

What is plex?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74811300

Plex is a personal media server. You store data on your hard drives, install plex server on a computer in your home, and then install plex clients on streaming devices and computers. The clients will go to the server and request the movie, photo, or music files, pull them from the hard drive to stream, and transcode them if needed.

Quite a wonderful piece of software!

Roku was great 8 years ago but it's fairly slow compared to newer android systems. I have like 4 of them sitting in my basement collecting dust. I think they were Roku 3 boxes. I think your better off with a firestick or really any modern android powered box. That way you can get kodi and then you will have all the TV you could ever imagine.

Just re-purpose an old laptop with Linux/KODI.

Even with a broken screen it will still work on the tv.

For remote just use any programmable remote and set it for xbox and use LIRC driver.

Re: Thinking about getting a Roku. Is it worth it? - Nevermind. Firestick it is.
If you have hulu and netflix subscriptions, I would think you need a roku to get the most out of them, unless you already have a smart TV.

I use it to watch Youtube videos on the big tv, and occasionally rent a movie from Amazon, which is very easy to do on roku.

I don't use the other channels very much. Most of them require a subscription.

The roku service itself is free and saves wear and tear on your computer.

You can use your phone as a remote on youtube which is cool, because searching on roku is awkward and time consuming.

I don't want the one with voice command, I don't like having microphones around me that are always on.

Re: Thinking about getting a Roku. Is it worth it? - Nevermind. Firestick it is.
Roku has a number of movie channels that show you a diet of mainly older b-movies & some crappy TV shows. They are free but they insert commercials and cut to them fairly often.

Some movie channels let you stream an ad-free version (usually .99c) or watch a newer movies (2.99). [TUBEIT is a good one]

Roku also lets you stream content from your computer (if you install a server on it). It gets Youtube.

Some News channels are free. Live streaming from Newsmax.

There are dozens of odd-ball channels and streams that are mostly useless.

You can also get a service like Sling for $20 bucks / month which gives you basic cable channels. and of course, netflix, hula, etc. now give you TV programming and movies for a monthly fee.

Just my opinion...I like football/basketball. I don't watch much else on cable. so with Sling Blue..i pay 20/month. during half the year, gets me FOX Sports. I add Sling Blue + Orange..i pay 40/month. gives me 3 ESPN's + 3 Fox Sports. (and 2 dozen CNN, HGTV, AMC, etc. type channels.) then after basketball i drop it back to $20/month

I can have 3 Roku's / Smart TV's at once.

I prefer it to cable. Simple remote, no cable box.

lolll why would u do that? just use a computer like a RPI or android TV box and watch movies over a samba share (Windows/Linux)? The only reason I see for additional software like that and opening up more ports on your devices is to stream this content over the internet, which is going to slow down read speed. Just use a local network and use samba, or hell, even an http or ftp server would work. plex seems like buying a computer from walmart when u can buy all the pieces for cheaper and put it together urself.

On a jailbroke firestick kodi comes on it and there is preconfigured set ups all over the Internet. You just download them.

It's ends up working as easy as roku.

Everything is preconfigured. You just go to movies, shows, games, kids, whatever category you're wanting to watch and go through the options or go to search and type in what you are looking for and there it is.

Then you watch it.

This is what my build looks like.

If you go with the fire stick PM me and I will send you the tutorial and link to the different wookie builds (that's the name of the site ppl create and download them to)

I'll send you the link. The only issue is the options for the settings during set up can be in different places because of the version of firestick you may get and how the modder broke it when he programmed it.

So if its not exactly like tutorial you just have to dig around and find the options he's talking about in the firesticks settings.

Or dig up a tutorial with your same firestick configuration.

Mine came with basic instructions from the seller.

PS They're the shit with a nice build like that downloaded. Everyone is jealous of mine.

Roku has been great... been using it for 5 years with very few issues.

thinking about moving to a plex setup, and cutting the cords to all the streaming services.
 Quoting: PirateMonkey

I've moved from a plex setup to a Kodi box set up. I'm a download junkie so I download literally every movie. There are only about 4 or 5 TV shows that I watch but I download them to. I've got a 5TB and a 3TB hard drive filled with content that I stream to all the TV's in my house from my computer with Plex and chromecasts.

I still have this Plex setup and I still download everything but now I've got Android Boxes with Kodi installed on each TV as well. Even though I download everything, I mostly use Kodi to watch everything now. It's got everything that I download plus pretty much every older movie that you could ever think of as well so I've just got into the habbit of using Kodi instead of watching the stuff that I've downloaded and have accessable through my plex.

Also my Kodi is set up to view all of my downloaded content as well so I don't even need the plex or the chromecasts anymore to view all of my stuff.

KODI is easy to get up and running as long as you use a pre-made build...

got o the official KODI site and download it and install it.

Then go and download the STREam app ( [link to kodiuk.tv] and pick a build, it will install the pre-made build and add all the extensions and repositories for you, so you don't have to do the hard part.

Then you are ready to watch whatever you want.

Retard or not, I use my Roku daily. I do use subscription channels, but there are also many great freebies.

We cut the cord a while back, but since my darlin' likes Fox business and Nascar, we subscribe to Playstation Vue (through the Roku), to get the channels he wants - it's about $40 a month, way less than half the comparable satellite/cable packages and no contract. I could certainly live without that, but he works hard and if he wants it, he can have it. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu give me everything I need. Sure, they're corporate assholes and tools, but I like what I like and they deliver it.

We also have antenna and for an OTA DVR, I use a Cloner Alliance Pro box. It's a cool little dude that will record just about anything.

Roku's Youtube channel sucks, but I can download my YT videos to an external drive and plug it into the Roku for playing. Hate watching long videos on the computer.

So there's my $1.98 worth.

I even have it on my cell phone (unlimited data plan).

KODI player can be complicated to install if you want to do it all yourself, but there are pre-made builds that offer all of this and are very easy to install, maybe takes 2 mins to get up and running.... and are free.

They are all over craigslist, every once in a while someone dumps one for $20. Usually $40-$50. A new one is around $80. They are extremely reliable.

It certainly isn't money wasted if you rely on netflix and hulu, they work great on there. There are a limited number of streaming news services. There are a number of great documentary channels. Conspiracy channels. But to be honest it isn't like you are going to get a bunch of great free channels, you have to look hard. People tend to watch youtube on it a lot.

If you want a plug and play connect two cords low power off you go setup I would highly advise trying one out!

I would recommend a roku 3 vs a roku 2 and I personally would recommend hardwiring it ethernet vs. wireless.
