Re: Picked up by ZeroHedge: I have been reviewing resumes and just keep face palming...
I own a small manufacturing company. Most of the assembly work is done at a bench, with hand tools. The work is not difficult, but quality and consistency is paramount.

We are entering into our busiest time of year, and steady growth combined with losing one of our senior bench techs has caused me to run some ads (after spreading the word around to friends and associates).

I have been involved in the manufacturing business for about 30 years, and have seen thousands of resumes.

The last couple weeks I have been reviewing a couple dozen resumes a day. What I am seeing now, is stunning and disappointing. When did people stop learning how to compose a sentence? When did they decide that a resume composed of two sentences is somehow complete? The poor level of spelling, grammar, and frankly effort has me perplexed and perpetually face-palming.

So far, I have two resumes that were not immediately round-filed. Just two.

If this is the current state of our potential work force, we are in trouble.
 Quoting: Azaziah

I hear you. But, grammatically speaking (and not a little ironically), your post should have said: "When did they decide that a resumé composed of two sentences is somehow complete? The poor level of spelling, grammar and, frankly, effort has me perplexed and perpetually face-palming.

A Resume has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a person would be an excellent candidate for a manufacturing position.

You are essentially requiring mastery of English to prove you can notice detail on a block of wood or whatever it is you do.

If you were as smart as you want your applicants to be, you'd judge them based on their motivation and ability to be trained to DO WHAT YOU NEED THEM TO DO and nothing more.

Many times an illiterate person will do a far greater job at manufacturing than someone with a PHD in English.

Seriously, I think you might just be trolling with a post this stupid.
 Quoting: Jai_Guru_Jesus_Om

It#s not too much to ask for someone that is literate.

And even if somebody is not very eloquent.. the resume does show an employer how eager and engaged a person is.. a few spelling mistakes should not close the doors.. but if you can see there is next to no effort put into introducing oneself to a potential employer.. then I can understand the OP's reaction.

And the dumb down is NOT somthing we should just accept or even celebrate.. it#s a fact people get dumber and dumber.. that isn't what i would want if I had a company either.

But if you need workbench worker to put the few pieces together with the spanner and screwdriver, why the fuck they need to put CV in academic English?

English language literacy is considered overburden for pupils even in English speaking countries. You better try to get someone who can barely speak any form of English but understands how to assemble what you need.

From my experience, fuck that resume bullshit and start to talk to people. Takes you 2-3 minutes to figure out if the candidate knows what you are talking about, so you can take it to the next level.

If you go through the employment agency, it is even worse, you have failed house wife that wants to "build career" and gets to vet the potential candidates in the field that she has no clue about.

Bullshit about nicely written shit on the peace of paper without any actual knowledge is gone, world has changed, you need people that can do the job or are willing to learn.

I will raise you one, OP. (Okay, maybe more than one.)

The facility where I work has onsite childcare and preschool. We are constantly hiring, because apparently careers in childcare and teaching attract the most unstable of folks. Two out of 3 applicants don't even bother to show up for their interview. The one that does show up likely has multiple children in tow (yup, bringing kids to the interview), OR may be dressed in pajama pants and slippers (actually happened).

If somehow one does get past and get hired, half the time they simply stop showing up for work.

And these are the people supposed to be teaching CHILDREN.

What does that tell you?

My neighbor was a union man at an automotive parts factory for 40 years and was illiterate. He got his job before he finished high school and the Union kept him employed till he retired. He couldn't spell his own kids names. It was sad. But even though he slept during work, stole thousands of dollars worth of tools from the company, got into fist fights with fellow employees - the Union made sure his employment was secure.
He wouldn't have lasted without his union.

You just proved the point that you have no concept of people. Even the local library can help people put their best foot forward and create a good resume.
If he hired people just because there is need out there and he took it on himself to do all the training for lazy people, his business would soon be in ruins.
Then lots of people would lose their jobs including the pathetic people looking for a free ride.
Why would he tie his future to a lazy person
Lazy people don't show up, they get out of work as much as possible and do not have pride in themselves......so why would they take pride in a job?

Whether or not the position requires spelling, grammar, etc., or not, it makes a very important impression - that the person cares. It's sort of like going to an interview in dirty clothes and unbathed...did the interviewee care enough to be presentable for the job interview? One's presentation speaks volumes.

Preparing a resume takes some effort and work. Is someone too lazy to work up a simple resume? Then, they will more than likely not care what kind of work they perform.

First impressions.

As a 41 year old with dyslexia I found writing CV's the hardest part of landing a job, many employees see grammar or spelling mistakes and instantly write you off.

My last job interview was gained by writing a CV and sending it to an expensive CV professional.

On return, I read it, and the CV shouted BS all over it but I used it and landed the interview.

The interview went very well and I landed the job from over 180 applicants plus 4 different interviews.

The job, a software developer for Airbus.

After 5 years there I was lead developer and header a number of multi-million projects.

I found the job come very easy and natural. If you fly any modern Airbus parts on it would at some point been tested using code myself, or my team wrote.

I am now self-employed and run a small but successful electrical engineering company with 7 employees and a number of sub-contractors when times get busy.

What I am trying to say is do not judge a book by its cover.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69395125

I have been a software developer for over 30 years. Starting back in the days where cobol, assembler and fortran where widely used.

I have met a lot of average programmers. Most are average at their best. Dyslexic. I feel for people who have to deal with that. I am sure it can be both frustrating and embarrassing at times.

I doubt you were ever more than average. Good enough for airbus, which is barely average, but nothing to brag about.

And if I had known of your condition, as someone who has hired and managed 100s of programmers, I would have been extremely diligent with your interview to ascertain for myself your capabilities and would have been extra diligent with you if I had hired you - for my protection and yours.
