Sure could use help with our website.

Yeah, websites have never been something I liked doing. I can if I have to though. However, if you need a server/system to run the website or anything else, I can set them up to run anything you can throw at it, at a 99% reliability and uptime.

Network, systems admin, system design is where I try to stay. Systems support and break/fix as well.

that's YOUR responsibility to train quality and consistency...the quality of your employees should come out of your pocket not theirs...its your business, pay for own bullshit and quit living off others while claiming success
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70775367

the whole reason that people interview is to find the most qualified candidate. Believe me, I've trained both very highly skilled and low skilled people. It is extremely difficult to take someone who is very low skill and make them more then that.

Also, to the comment that it's just manufacturing and you don't need to know English, you've obviously never worked in high-end manufacturing where details and quality matters.

As most know, the lowest skilled job is flipping burgers
There are fast food places that only accept resumes.
That tells me, you need to BS your way into the job.

40 years ago, it most places, fast food and beyond, you filled out an "application" onsite and talked to the boss the same day and were hired or not

Business has WAY to much leverage in this country over the citizens of this country

They buy out our politicians
They enact Trade Deals with Communist Countries\
They bring in illegals
They cry for lower taxes so other people have to pay for it

America is one of the worse countries when it comes to capitalism where all parties have bargaining rights

Nice shout-out. Sorry it's for no-so-great circumstances, but there are people out there that actually read this stuff - not just us Lunatics.

Speaking of which, here's another article - "The Rise of the Lunatic Fringe" that someone just tweeted. Odd, because it's from 2013. It caught my attention for obvious reasons, but it's also by the same author from ZH. I just found this timing surprising that they both came up on the same day for me.

The author has be a regular here, even if he's an AC. He captured this place beautifully. That last paragraph is prophetic. Read it (remembering that it was written in 2013) and then add on "and then Trump happened."

A Resume has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a person would be an excellent candidate for a manufacturing position.

You are essentially requiring mastery of English to prove you can notice detail on a block of wood or whatever it is you do.

If you were as smart as you want your applicants to be, you'd judge them based on their motivation and ability to be trained to DO WHAT YOU NEED THEM TO DO and nothing more.

Many times an illiterate person will do a far greater job at manufacturing than someone with a PHD in English.

Seriously, I think you might just be trolling with a post this stupid. Put them on the job for a day then you'll know where you stand to much paperwork to get jobs nowadays.

I own a small manufacturing company. Most of the assembly work is done at a bench, with hand tools. The work is not difficult, but quality and consistency is paramount.

We are entering into our busiest time of year, and steady growth combined with losing one of our senior bench techs has caused me to run some ads (after spreading the word around to friends and associates).

I have been involved in the manufacturing business for about 30 years, and have seen thousands of resumes.

The last couple weeks I have been reviewing a couple dozen resumes a day. What I am seeing now, is stunning and disappointing. When did people stop learning how to compose a sentence? When did they decide that a resume composed of two sentences is somehow complete? The poor level of spelling, grammar, and frankly effort has me perplexed and perpetually face-palming.

So far, I have two resumes that were not immediately round-filed. Just two.

If this is the current state of our potential work force, we are in trouble.

You have no idea what it takes to run a business. Insurance, workman's comp, taxes, cost of supplies, upkeep of building, cost to operate business(electric, water, gas), upkeep of equipment and the list goes on.

How much of that would you be willing to help out with out of your check to receive a higher wage?

You think like an idealist. Almost everything you stated above has to do with inadequate compensation. So if you pay more, you get better workers. This is not true at all.

Also, you have clue how much OP pays, you're only guessing he does not pay enough.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74975987

Supply and Demand always wins
Offer a high enough pay and you will get workers

You can always cry to big government and purchase politicians to let some illegals in though, that will shack 10 to a room, go on food stamps and then you only pay 5 bucks an hour, then cry your taxes are too high to pay for it and make others foot the cost

These minimum wage jogs are for usually unskilled work. If you have issues with that, learn a trade/skill that demands more money than what minimum wage does.

You people miss the point of minimum wage. Minimum wage should be acting as a motivator to step your game up and learn to be more valuable. If you have no skills above flipping burgers and trying to maintain a household, thats YOUR fault. Quit complaining if you do not know how do anything outside of the mundane.

I also have heard of what some employers paying for what used to be good paying jobs, and that is not flipping burgers.

From construction, to welding to roofing and so on, employers reaped the benefits of illegal labor especially in the southern states from what I see and are now crying foul.

I have never seen an employer tell an employee they could not talk to someone else.

If you are talking about forming unions? Screw that, if a union formed I would shut the business down and lock the doors. Then none of you all would have a job.

I would however, and I do not need some law or agency tell me how to do it. I would make sure the employees had a clean, safe environment to work in.

Resumes used to be simple and practical, basically an application without grids.

Over-the-years they have become like high school proms, everyone has to up the ante if they want to make an impression. Fly your resume/prom date in on a helicopter and have it/her greeted by a barbershop quartet singing it's praises as a orphan scatters rose petals beneath it/her.

It's not enough to list your skills and work history, which is really what it all comes down to. Now it's all about embellishment and creative lying to compete for menial jobs that pay very little.

It's a farce, it's meaningless.

Guess all the idiots who posted below you about not needing a resume, were proved wrong, as the article quotes many other sources to back up your claim of the downfalls

#Vindicated !

I was one of your supporters and could not agree with you more, as i said days ago on this thread, millenials are the entitlement generation, don't want to put any effort for anything

Re: Picked up by ZeroHedge: I have been reviewing resumes and just keep face palming...
Wow, really? No doubt now that they read GLP:
[link to www.zerohedge.com]

There are too many entitled people and I don't mean those on the employee side.

They want everything served to them on the platter.
A few years ago, a real asshole told me, the only thing a business exist for is to make a profit for their shareholders and owners.

He never included workers and consumers in his equation.
In capitalism, all workers, consumers, and business owners all should have equal power and that is not the case today.

Business owners bought out our politicians, enacted trade deals with communist countries, sells weapons to terrorist countries

There is absolutely no moral nor principles about business in America but to rape everyone around them

Do you not understand the relationship between the owner and the employees?

Its simple. The owner is the boss, period. If you do not like it, then start your own business and you can be the boss. Then you can practice your philosophy on how to give your employees equal power.

A business is not a democracy.

Do you know what Laissez Faire Capitalism?
It is not a dicatorship, nor corporate fascism as you may think.

Under laissez-faire, workers have the same rights as everyone else: to life, liberty and property. As applies to the workplace, they have the right to choose their contracts. They have the right to have their property and lives rigorously protected. They have the right to meet with anyone, including other workers, to try to organize for improved contracts and work conditions.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74970822

They have the right to choose their contracts already. The contract is whether or not they choose to continue working there. If they do not like something, they are free to leave.

But I bet you have no problem with Big Business Organizing and Purchasing Politicians to bring in H1B and creating Trade Pacts with Communist Countries?

Do you know what TPP, NAFTA, China Trade and so on was created by?

Organized Business fucking over Americans

I think you should shut your business down now
