the whole reason that people interview is to find the most qualified candidate. Believe me, I've trained both very highly skilled and low skilled people. It is extremely difficult to take someone who is very low skill and make them more then that.

Also, to the comment that it's just manufacturing and you don't need to know English, you've obviously never worked in high-end manufacturing where details and quality matters.

Unrealistic wage expectations is a close #2 here. I'm a self employed small business owner and I can't get anyone to help me in my business because the morons think they should be paid what I make for doing some simple data entry. The entitlement attitude is just freaking crazy!

A Resume has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a person would be an excellent candidate for a manufacturing position.

You are essentially requiring mastery of English to prove you can notice detail on a block of wood or whatever it is you do.

If you were as smart as you want your applicants to be, you'd judge them based on their motivation and ability to be trained to DO WHAT YOU NEED THEM TO DO and nothing more.

Many times an illiterate person will do a far greater job at manufacturing than someone with a PHD in English.

I own a small manufacturing company. Most of the assembly work is done at a bench, with hand tools. The work is not difficult, but quality and consistency is paramount.

We are entering into our busiest time of year, and steady growth combined with losing one of our senior bench techs has caused me to run some ads (after spreading the word around to friends and associates).

I have been involved in the manufacturing business for about 30 years, and have seen thousands of resumes.

The last couple weeks I have been reviewing a couple dozen resumes a day. What I am seeing now, is stunning and disappointing. When did people stop learning how to compose a sentence? When did they decide that a resume composed of two sentences is somehow complete? The poor level of spelling, grammar, and frankly effort has me perplexed and perpetually face-palming.

So far, I have two resumes that were not immediately round-filed. Just two.

If this is the current state of our potential work force, we are in trouble.

So you want to pay someone minimum wage while you will be making big bucks and they are the entitled ones?

You think like an idealist. Almost everything you stated above has to do with inadequate compensation. So if you pay more, you get better workers. This is not true at all.

Speaking of which, here's another article - "The Rise of the Lunatic Fringe" that someone just tweeted. Odd, because it's from 2013. It caught my attention for obvious reasons, but it's also by the same author from ZH. I just found this timing surprising that they both came up on the same day for me.

The author has be a regular here, even if he's an AC. He captured this place beautifully. That last paragraph is prophetic. Read it (remembering that it was written in 2013) and then add on "and then Trump happened."

You have no idea what it takes to run a business. Insurance, workman's comp, taxes, cost of supplies, upkeep of building, cost to operate business(electric, water, gas), upkeep of equipment and the list goes on.

How much of that would you be willing to help out with out of your check to receive a higher wage?

Running a household is also like running a business and all the things your cited apply as well that workers need to pay for

Those things need to be paid as well
Most business crying NOW would already be in China if they could, but it is kind of hard to sell to your customers when they are here and you are in the service industry

that's YOUR responsibility to train quality and consistency...the quality of your employees should come out of your pocket not theirs...its your business, pay for own bullshit and quit living off others while claiming success

Resumes used to be simple and practical, basically an application without grids.

Over-the-years they have become like high school proms, everyone has to up the ante if they want to make an impression. Fly your resume/prom date in on a helicopter and have it/her greeted by a barbershop quartet singing it's praises as a orphan scatters rose petals beneath it/her.


It's not enough to list your skills and work history, which is really what it all comes down to. Now it's all about embellishment and creative lying to compete for menial jobs that pay very little.

They have the right to choose their contracts already. The contract is whether or not they choose to continue working there. If they do not like something, they are free to leave.

I have never seen an employer tell an employee they could not talk to someone else.

If you are talking about forming unions? Screw that, if a union formed I would shut the business down and lock the doors. Then none of you all would have a job.

I would however, and I do not need some law or agency tell me how to do it. I would make sure the employees had a clean, safe environment to work in.
