The ancient hatchling died when it was just a few days or weeks old after a blob of sticky tree resin fell on it, leaving half of its body frozen in time. ... The amber encases the bird’s skull, neck, a partial wing, a hind limb and one foot. ... Scientists discovered the bird was unusual in several ways—the structure of its wings was very similar to those seen in modern flying birds—but it retained some features that are seen in more primitive theropods, the group of dinosaurs from which modern birds emerged. Chen Guang, curator of a museum in Yunnan and owner of the specimen, told Xinhua : "Many people thought it was a lizard. But the scales, thread-like feathers and sharp claws on the feet were so noticeable that I thought they must belong to a bird.”" Take a look at the image of the foot to clearly see the scales and the image of the "thread-like feathers". Fascinating. Have fun. R. I've seen that movie. It didn't end well. |

Quoting: zörro Were there exploding resinous trees all over the place or what? Most of the time it's the flying insects that are just attracted to the sweetness of the resin. Other times it's just bad luck on the part of whichever insects or small creatures and plant matter gets caught in the resins. Valuable non the less but when you find a rare gem like a baby bird, especially in Myanmar...your gonna retire quick. Chaipas has some of the best quality amber and the Chinese go crazy over it. |

I've seen that movie. It didn't end well. I saw it too. And you know what line of dinosaurs birds descended from? The line of T-Rex & Co. Gives a whole new atmosphere to Hitchcock's "The Birds", doesn't it? Have fun. R. They can date it through various geochronology methods including radiometric dating (uranium-lead dating, etc.) But what really happened here is that on the 16th day Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth decided to have fried chicken for dinner and they picked this poor bird and its brother for the feast and this is all that's left. So ended the line of the scaly feathered dinosaur-birds thanks to Noah and his yardbird eating family. Have fun. R.
