Via Cliff French TV; "Just got to TECO plant in Apollo Beach. I'm told a handful of injuries, possibly burns. Nothing clear quite yet"

At least two victims flown to Tampa General Hospital (TGH); others transported via ambulance. Per WFLA

On a side note; thunderstorms rolling into area now.

From google maps, it looks like a coal burning power plant. If the injuries were from chemical burns, it was probably a spill of caustic solution used for their wet scrubbers.

That's some nasty shit!!! Probably life altering injuries for the survivors.

Fox13 on air reporter just stated, "This is an ongoing ACTIVE HAZMAT situation". Four patients transported to TGH with "burn like" injuries." Hillsborough Fire & Rescue still working the scene.

Explosion in unit 2. Occurred near slag tank.

2 dead.

2 airlifted to TGH.

2 ground transported.

All have life threatening injuries.

All employees/contractors accounted for.

The slag tank was undergoing routine maintenance at the time of explosion.

I did too. It scared the crap out of me. Thank God it was a slag tank.

TECO press conference ongoing ATM; TECO Pres Gillette stated, they have been unable to speak to eye witnesses at this time, all were affected by the accident. They were attempting to release a blockage at the #2 boiler slag receptacle (underneath boiler) when the accident occurred. The slag that spilled at the scene was 40 feet in diameter and approx 6 inches deep.

No victims names released at this time, awaiting Hillsborough Sheriffs Office release. One deceased was 35 yr employee, one a contractor.

Father & Step-Son both hospitalized with severe burns. Frank Lee Jones, 55 & Gary Marine, Jr, 32. Also hospitalized; Antonio Navverrette, 21 & Armando J Perez, 56.

Killed were, Christopher Irvin, 40 of Tampa & Michael McCort, 55 of Riverview.

They were all severely burned by molten material that gushed from a blocked tank the crew was trying to unplug. Experts say the slag that burned the workers reaches temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees.
