Most human beings can only say, ‘I do odd jobs…I struggle…I rack my brains…I make some feeble attempts.’ That is all most humans can say. But real work is something completely different. And this is why, after two thousand years, we have not yet fathomed the deep meaning of the phrase ‘My Father is still working, and I also am working.’ It has remained unused and meaningless. Have we ever wondered what this work of God is, how he works, and in what way Jesus was involved in this work? The work of Christ is to purify, to harmonize and illuminate, and to direct everything toward the divine Source, which in turn pours forth the currents of life over the entire earth. Only someone who has managed to rise as far as the divine Spirit in order to imbue themself with its quintessence and then to distribute its benefits to all creatures, has earned the right to say ‘I am working.’

Those who decide to work towards the birth of the Christ within, first come into conflict with the forces of their lower nature and sexuality. Those are the forces they must master and put to work for the divine Child. And so it is said that in the stable the ox and the ass breathed on the child and warmed him with their breath. When human beings succeed in transforming the ass and the ox within themselves, then they can warm and nourish the newborn child. All those who have succeeded in bringing into being the Christ within will be sustained by the forces of their lower nature and their sexuality, which are amazingly helpful if we only know how to put them to work.

The idea of serving others does not strike many people as immediately attractive; it is even humiliating, and that is because they do not know what true service is. Otherwise, why would Jesus have said in the Gospels, ‘The greatest among you will be your servant’? Those who are great never find it demeaning to be at the service of others, because their greatness is of the spirit. They know that no task will make them lose their nobility, their true greatness. Jesus was great because he knew how to be infinitely small. He who said, ‘I am the truth’ never asked anyone to bow down before him to serve him – on the contrary, he made himself the humble servant of all people. Why? Because truth is charged with immeasurable energy. And so it has to be presented carefully for others to receive it and assimilate it without it causing any damage. The power conferred by truth should also express itself through humility, love and gentleness.

When the decision to follow a certain path is etched deeply into your being, it becomes like an instinct that prevents you from straying and shows you how to avoid or overcome obstacles. If you too often forget the good resolutions you made, it is because you have not yet imprinted them strongly enough in your subconscious, at the very core of your cells. The role of a spiritual Master is actually to reawaken in the soul of their disciples the memory of past experiences and of the decisions they made. Otherwise, when they are once more about to cross over into the beyond, they will yet again have to admit to the mediocrity, inanity and emptiness of the life they lived. And they will be condemned to wander in the dark, arid regions of the other world. Jesus said, ‘Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.’ This recommendation sums up a whole science of life.
