PLEASE..... Educate yourself on these Medicines before taking them.... I wish I had... Share to everyone so Everyone can make an informed decision!!!

I have prescribed Cipro hundreds and hundreds of times to women with UTI's and not a single adverse reaction was ever had. Every drug has a risk of side effects, I'm sorry to hear about anyone that has a bad reaction to medication but if we eliminate every drug that has had bad reaction we would literally have no medications left in which to prescribed anymore. People are getting a little too hysterical about this stuff.
 Quoting: Snakes 72450334

I call bullshit on this. Cipro induced tendonitis is well documented in medical literature; it is a known side effect along with others such as headache, nausea, vomiting, neurological signs and god help us, yeast infections.

Not only do I suffer from this, I have treated patients of my own who have had Cipro induced tendonitis. So, nope. You are full of shit, sport.

We should compare medical degrees and years of experience treating patients one of these days for funsies, I mean you must be a good doctor with your expert website linking capability..... Look, ALL medications have the potential to cause side effects, some more than others. Until Cipro is pulled from the formulary it's going to be prescribed on a regular basis. With bacterial resistance becoming more and more problematic it's likely that Cipro won't be going anywhere because not too many pharmaceutical companies are chomping at the bit to blow a fortune on testing a new antibiotic that will make them little to no money in return. Honestly you're not going to give a shit about the possible risk of tendonitis when a bacterial sinus infection that is susceptible to Cipro is eating it's way into your orbit and traveling down your optic nerve or when you develop pyelonephritis as a result of refusing Cipro for a simple UTI.

Has anyone heard of Cipro's nastier cousin?

Larium aka mefloquine. i will post links if anyone would like. this shit has fucked up 2 generations of vets. this is why we have over 22 vets offing themselves a day
 Quoting: panther0621

I took Larium about 20-years ago when I worked in Africa.

That stuff makes you crazy. It took me several months to feel like myself again after taking it for 4 weeks.

It's no wonder that vets who take it for a year or more would end up completely messed up.

I think in the long run it would be safer to just slather on DEET. As bad as that stuff is, it's easier to detox from it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74538516

I ended up taking it for 6 months. Was issued not prescribed. We did not get the list of symptoms of toxicity and we also drank for new years and the super bowl. not a thing you should do if you are taking it, let alone showing toxicity. My body and mind are shot. I feel like a soul trapped in a broken vessel. I always see things about cipro; I wish those effects were all that I deal with.

DEET was issued; i really dont remember bugs anyway. should have been all that we needed. it was afganistan not liberia. Did you get the crazy larium dreams? i and others have those permanently now.
 Quoting: panther0621

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with such awful side effects. I hope and pray that it gets better for you with time. Usually, damage from quinolones can heal, but it takes a long time.

In my case, I took it in 1994 when I was in Tanzania, working in a refugee camp during the Rwanda massacre.

I don't recall having Larium dreams, but I slept a lot and was waking up in a pool of sweat for months even after I got home. I felt very tired and just did not feel like myself at all, both physically and mentally. I got tested. I thought maybe I was sick, but my test results all came back normal.

My personality changed when I was on the Larium. My entire outlook changed. I was no longer my cheerful, outgoing self. I was withdrawn and even a bit paranoid, defensive due to groundless feelings of persecution. It was like I had become another person for several months. This started before I even went to Africa. The doctor had me take the first dose before I left. I began feeling really off during a layover at Heathrow airport on the way there.

I did not have PTSD. It was the Larium. I have to wonder how many vets diagnosed with PTSD are actually suffering from Lariam toxicity.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74538516

This describes me personality change to a Tee. I used to be very outgoing and social. now i feel uncomfortable around a large group of family even. other things have changed that i do not see/understand but friends and love ones point them out.

Also the VA flat out lies and has doctors tell you they have never heard of the drug or effects. They will stuff PTSD pills down your throat to even consider benifits. i am in the middle of a 8 year fight for them. this has comepletely ruined my life and brain.

Has anyone heard of Cipro's nastier cousin?

I mentioned the suicidal ideation Cipro can provoke. They say it is only for pre-existing suicidal states, but that is untrue.
 Quoting: beeches

I am sure Cipro can cause suicidal ideation. Larium causes it whiled taking it and for some years and decades afterwards.

Here is the thing wrong with your statement. Just because nothing was reported to you as side effects did not mean they did not happen. First the side effects don't always occur right away, secondly the patient might not have realized the Meds did what ever to them. The first if effected on me was my knees I did not think it was the Cipro I knew nothing of this side effect. Not until it went to other ares like my fingers back and foot did I seek out help. Also they may have not just reported it to you. And went to another Dr. the ER or urgent care or something.
And as for "People are getting a little too hysterical about this stuff." I have a 7 yr old who I have no been able to play with and run around with for OVER A MONTH! The pain has went from me screaming out to a constant dull throbbing Never knowing when it is gonna be go back to screaming out in pain... unable to work.. heck or even cook dinner for that matter.... so as it is now my life is SHIT! tell me how not to be hysterical...

Cipro is a big, nasty antibiotic and should ONLY be used for big, nasty and INTERNAL infections. Mostly STD's or post-op infections.

It, in and of itself comes with a myriad of side effects.

It's like the chemo of antibiotics.

Even worse than a Zpack because you take it for longer.
I didn't mean to do that...or did I?

Super nasty.

I'm dealing with it as part of a cocktail as we speak.

A month long cycle mixed with Clindamycin after a week of non-stop IV consisting of Vancomycin and piperacillin/Tazo.

This is a first stop for an apple sized mass in my right lung.

No idea what your condition was and or is but I'd be willing to bet that Cipro alone is not the culprit for the pain and problems you are having. Fluoroquinolnes like Levofloxacin are powerful and are reserved often times as second or third line meds for an infection that is resistant or fast moving. The risk benefit ratio still strongly favors their use over the adverse outcomes of non-treatment. I'm sorry that you are dealing with whatever problems you have medically, but in medicine we go by what works for the vast majority of patients, unfortunately for a very very small few it does not work out favorably. If you can go to medical school and establish better treatment plans and standards of care then I'm all for it, but so far this is the best modern medicine has been able to produce. If the FDA was truly worried about then this class of antibiotic would have been yanked off the market a long time ago. But again, the risk benefit ratio is still well within acceptable limits.

The day I started taking Cipro I was at the pool.. having fun with my kids... walking running laughing.. within 48 hours.. I could not walk.. then within the week had 3 more points of pain pop up... One thing in common with Dr.s they are taught from books bought and paid for by Big Pharma. When was the last time you tried to heal a patient without meds... My husband got athletes foot that spread kinda quick and then bad cellulitis.. they gave him IV antibiotics.. and pills to take on top of it.. then was looking at doing a surgery on it... I said no took him home did homework and we got it all cleared up with Oregano oil.... when he went to his follow up and the Dr. was amazed he told them how he cleared it up.. and the Dr.s reply well yeah there was that option.. WTF hey lets make you take all these meds.. and offer surgery.. but not tell you about putting a dang oil on it??? The Dr. knew about this but never told us. The one thing all recalled Med have in common is the FDA approved them in the first place..
