Could affect it, but not likely connected. There is a massive underground feeding system that is part of the caldera that extends into other states where magma moves. This earthquake could be related to that caldera. It is not out of the range of possibilities given it is just the state over from the caldera. |

And 50% rule, Fox News: Quoting: WHITE GLOVES ""Earthquake swarms are common in Yellowstone and, on average, comprise about 50% of the total seismicity in the Yellowstone region," the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) said in a statement on its website. "UUSS will continue to monitor this swarm and will provide updates as necessary." Though experts at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) say the risk of the Yellowstone supervolcano erupting is quite low (the probability is one in 730,000), it may erupt again in the future. There have been three major "caldera-forming eruptions" in Yellowstone in the last 2.1 million years, the last occuring 640,000 years ago. Since then, there have been a number of smaller erurptions, with the last one emitting rhyolite lava, causing the Pitchstone Plateau flow some 70,000 years ago, the UUSS wrote on its website." what people dont seem to understand is that super eruptions are very rare but small eruptions are much less rare. chances are if there is an eruption at yellow stone it wll be small. |

I thought the magma chamber was shifting. Twice in the last week I have heard of people talking about increased activity at Yellow Stone. I am not sure if this is anything to be concerned about or not. I do not believe it will just blow. I can see it slowly letting off pressure over a period of time. |

Update 07:59 UTC: On October 31 1935 Helena was struck by an even stronger earthquake which measured a Magnitude 6.2! Quoting: Luisport Wikipedia damage report of that earthquake : There was widespread damage to unreinforced masonry structures in the Helena area with more than 200 chimneys being destroyed. The strongest effects were seen in the northeast, where buildings were constructed on alluvial soil, and in the southern business district, which contained many brick buildings. The most extensively damaged building was the Helena High School, which was completed in August 1935[2] and had just been dedicated in early October. The school buildings, which had cost $500,000, had not been designed to be earthquake resistant. Another building that was totally destroyed and had to be rebuilt was the Lewis and Clark County Hospital. The October 18 earthquake caused an estimated $3 million of damage to property. The aftershock of October 31 caused an estimated $1 million of further property damage, particularly to structures already weakened by the October 18 shock. Two people were killed by falling bricks in Helena during the October 18 shock.[2] Two brick masons died as a result of the October 31 aftershock, while removing a brick tower. Images below courtesy Wikipedia [link to earthquake-report.com (secure)] By the OLD RICHTER SCALE (BEFORE 1980'S) the Helena quake tonight would have been a 6.8 pt. if USGS had NOT tampered with the original richter scale numbers. The USGS downgraded by a full point (100s of magnitudes) all quakes after Dr. Richter died. This was a large quake in Montana for sure. (And I'm right in the middle of it--it was freaky.) Keep betting, but know this about the areas history: There was the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake (known as the 1959 Yellowstone earthquake) that occurred on August 17, at 11:37 pm (MST)in southwestern Montana. The earthquake measured 7.3 – 7.5 on the Richter scale and caused a huge landslide that caused over 28 fatalities and left $11 million (1959 US$, $88.7 million 2016 US$) in damage. The slide blocked the flow of the Madison River, resulting in the creation of Quake Lake! Effects of the earthquake were also felt in Idaho and Wyoming. Sound familiar? The potential for catastrophe exists. Residents are correctly concerned. Prayers for safety and wisdom to know what to do if emergency arises. May God direct your every move. Just Waiting |

Wow! Montana. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38773771 The 5.8 is pretty respectable. Congratulations... in a way. I've been in a 5.3... Shook things up pretty good. Cracks in walls and foundations, lots of movement... but no building collapses. then then Ive felt a 5.2 in the UK. Its not to be sniffed at (it put a couple people in hospital from falling debris), but its not that strong really. |

Definitely something going on, but it's a long way from the Yellowstone Caldera and NOT connected. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74020185 . Well it is connected due to the extremely large Magma Chamber that is now known to extend to Wisdom Montana a short hop to Lincoln (about 100 miles) as this mass extends not only North and West of the park in a bit of a semi circle (just like the earthquakes show) along this portion of the Craton edge coming up the Rocky Mountain chain.. so yes this is not right at Yellowstone but shows the movement of the 2nd MAGMA chamber that has RECENTLY been shown as CONNECTED TO the Yellowstone magma chamber.. According to Science, researchers had already known about a plume that brings molten rock up to within about 37 miles of the surface that contains about 2,400 cubic miles of magma. The new find represents "the missing link between the mantle plume and the shallow magma chamber," Peter Cervelli, a geophysicist in Anchorage, Alaska, who works at the U.S. Geological Survey's Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, was quoted by Science as saying. Trying really hard to post facts on here.. it is NOT DOOM.. it is Magna movement connected TO THE YELLOWSTONE CALDERA.. I can not post the picture as I would like (nothing is working) but the discovery as of late 2013 shows that the DEEP MAGMA CHAMBER IS CONNECTED AND IS FURTHER TO THE NORTH OF THE PARK WITH THE YELLOWSTONE CALDERA RIGHT UNDER THE PARK.
