This is all true. However, at the same time, a good deal of our infrastructure is failing. So, if they can reformulate a cement that has a longer life span, that would be a good thing.

Summary of first 3, for people who don't feel like skimming:

1. Roman marine concrete incorporates volcanic ash & rock, which reacts with seawater to form new minerals, reinforcing the structure.

2. Pyramid stones were not carved. They were poured & cast calcium-aluminate cements.
(Ca-Al has some fantastic properties, I never thought of construction with it.)

3. More of a mystery: incredibly long-lasting (prehistoric), precisely-fashioned basalt structures (a volcanic mineral).. appear to be man-made but no clues as to how?

I had this same idea but did'nt know this stuff was already out there. I thought mixing urethane foam with hemp and concrete would be indestructible.

Modern human beings use Portland cement in underwater concrete. However, ancient concrete listed below is better than modern underwater concrete:
1. Roman concrete (note 1)
2. Concrete in the pyramids of Egypt (note 2)
3. Concrete in "basalt columns" (note 3)
4. Concrete on Mars (note 4)
Note 1 below reports that scientists are trying to produce new cement/concrete. It will have huge market.

Concrete the grows stronger over decades, and self repairs - at least to a limited extent, would be amazing stuff!!

Apparently the Romans had a great concrete formulation ... it is too bad it got lost over the centuries as Rome collapsed.
