However, ancient concrete listed below is better than modern underwater concrete: Quoting: Faceless2 1. Roman concrete (note 1) 2. Concrete in the pyramids of Egypt (note 2) 3. Concrete in "basalt columns" (note 3) 4. Concrete on Mars (note 4) Note 1 below reports that scientists are trying to produce new cement/concrete. It will have huge market. Note 1: see [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)] Note 2: see [link to www.geopolymer.org (secure)] Note 3: see [link to wretchfossil.blogspot.tw] Note 4: see [link to wretchfossil.blogspot.tw] Summary of first 3, for people who don't feel like skimming: 1. Roman marine concrete incorporates volcanic ash & rock, which reacts with seawater to form new minerals, reinforcing the structure. 2. Pyramid stones were not carved. They were poured & cast calcium-aluminate cements. (Ca-Al has some fantastic properties, I never thought of construction with it.) 3. More of a mystery: incredibly long-lasting (prehistoric), precisely-fashioned basalt structures (a volcanic mineral).. appear to be man-made but no clues as to how? 5* pretty amazing finds OP. Why the fuck does the pyramid have granite box inside? There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true. |

I thought mixing urethane foam with hemp and concrete would be indestructible. Yeah, your idea is probably stronger. Air Crete sounds great because is seems to be so inexpensive. If I had the time, I would love to play around with the stuff. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72052582 Apparently the Romans had a great concrete formulation ... it is too bad it got lost over the centuries as Rome collapsed. the colliseum still stands . thousands of years old - or is it hundreds - not sure . modern reinforced concrete lasts only 50 years . the internal steel rusts and it crumbles . why can't "scientists" take a sample in rome and analyse it ? i saw a doco which said roman concrete contains volcanic ash . |
