GEOENGINEERING : SOLAR RADIATION MANAGEMENT
HAS UNWANTED REGIONAL IMPACTS

Injecting Massive quantities of sunlight-reflecting particles into the atmosphere
isn't the quick fix for global climate change
that advocates believe it to be, a new study finds.

A paper published in Nature,
shows by computer modeling,
that SRM leads to declines in rainfall in the long term,
but its effects will also vary by region.

Some places are over-cooled by atmospheric changes
that are too small to be effective for their neighbors.

The gases used for SRM are compounds
that produce aerosols in the atmosphere.

Geoengineers plan to inject large quantities of these materials,
by releasing them from airplanes.

Once there, they disperse into a thin, bright haze
that reflects sunlight back into space.

Using SRM at ever-expanding scales,
so the increasing greenhouse gases
are then offset by ever-greater sunlight reduction.

But, unfortunately, the changes in sunlight alters other weather patterns.

"It changes the distribution of energy in the troposphere
so that it becomes more convectively stable."
The result of this is : decreasing precipitation.

The modelers found that all of these effects get worse with time.

"The compensation is imperfect."
"The longer you do it, the more imperfect it becomes."
