A massive atmospheric experiment is planned for August solar eclipse
Great idea!

On Aug. 21, as the moon passes in front of the sun and casts a shadow across the United States, millions are expected to gaze at the totality. Meanwhile, a smaller crowd will be glued to 150 custom-made radio receivers set up across the country.

The project, called EclipseMob, is the largest experiment of its kind in history. By recording changes in the radio signal, these citizen scientists will collect data on the ionosphere — the region of the atmosphere where, miles above Earth's surface, cosmic and solar radiation bumps electrons free from atoms and molecules.

“Any solar eclipse is a good opportunity to study the ionosphere,” said Jill K. Nelson, an expert in signal processing at George Mason University in Virginia. The level of ions in the ionosphere fluctuates from day to night, decreasing in the absence of sunlight. But this change happens gradually during normal sunrises and sunsets. The sudden light-to-dark switch as it occurs during the eclipse, then, is an opportune moment to observe this layer of the atmosphere.

........... Increased free electrons in lower regions of the ionosphere during the day alters radio wave transmission, which is why AM radio signals are stronger at night, Nelson said.

I could have sworn there was about a 6 page thread on this a few weeks ago. Can't seem to find it anymore.

And on a more woo-woo note, it'll be very interesting to watch the GCP dot. How long will that bouncing ball stay Blue?

It is not only vain, but wicked, in a legislator to frame laws in opposition to the laws of nature, and to arm them with the terrors of death. This is truly creating crimes in order to punish them.

I live near St. Louis, and noticed there are new antennas hooked to our speed limit signs on 270, across the river in IL. Not sure if they are connected to this. Not even sure they're antennas. They don't have cameras on them, and they are on the signs that change the speed limits from 65 to 55, or vice versa.

I'll try to get a pic on my way home today. Curious if they are the same thing.

Saving up for a telescope, hopefully I'll have enough to buy one before the eclipse.

Get a refractor and not a reflector telescope, when viewing the sun. The sun's rays will distort and destroy the reflective lenses. Reflector's are way better for night viewing of stars and planets...

Zero point energy would not be effected by darkness. Otherwise, you'd be able to see a noticeable difference at nighttime....

Don't know what you mean by underground. The eclipse is not going to effect the amount of Neutrinos striking the planet...

Would be interesting if there was a solar flare occurring at the same time as the eclipse. That would make a good atmospheric experiment to see how much of the solar winds are blocked by the moon during an eclipse...

I'm driving with my wife and her friend to St. Clair, MO for a full 2 min and 40 second spectacular show of totality.

I'm planning on taking video with a Nikon d90 on a tripod of the approaching shadow. I hope it turns out awesome.

Hopefully, the day of the eclipse will be a clear one. And at totality, you will find that the moon is the most intense black color you've ever seen.
