Yep, I cared for my Mum at home for the last 17 years of her life. After her last fall she was bedridden and sure enough, every 3-4 weeks the delirium symptoms would kick in. Pee test and UTI diagnosed, straight onto antibiotics.... 3 days later 'sharp as a tack'. These were serial infections I got to recognise the very early symptoms and each time the antibiotics sorted her out. I was a bit worried the meds would become ineffective but that never happened. It seems OP's fears may be correct, it doesn't sound right not to give her antibiotics right away. The Dr's priority to get her into a nursing home seems like he may be getting a backhander. OP, I'm hoping your Mum gets a chance for some antibio's, it's very unprofessional of that Dr not want to speak with you. . |

If you would have been at the doctors appointment, it would have been easier to give input. You are correct that a UTI can cause delerium in the elderly. But, isn't vascular dementia diagnosed via scan results - either a CT or MRI? |

I cured each UTI infection within about 6 hours with the following very safe herbal supplement-- "Cranberry with D-Mannose"-- the cranberry makes the urinary walls less attractive for the UTI biofilm, and D-Mannose is a sugar that is harmless to humans but that the bugs love to eat and then they die. So they get flushed down the toilet. It always works like a charm for me!! [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] I now drink only filtered water, not the straight well water. For some reason the cranberry alone does not work for me, but the Cranberry with D Mannose is an amazing supplement!! For your Mom-- I would take her home for a while-- do not let them get their dirty hands on her!! If you need to, get her a home help aid for a few hours per day if her social security can pay for this. Get groceries delivered if possible and visit her frequently give instructions to the home health aid. I would also talk to a lawyer about a simple a power of attorney for your mom or better--- simply apply to the court for a 1) Guardianship and 2) Financial Custodianship of your mom--- BEFORE someone in social services beats you to it-- and takes control over your mom without your knowledge. The guardianship means that YOU control what is done with your dependent adult. The Financial Custodianship means YOU control all her financial affairs, including her pension, real estate and social security. I don't think this is too expensive, and would be worth it before some predators clean her out and leave you with the bill. |
