so this doctor who works in geriatric psych knows my mom has a urinary tract infection, even all non doctors in nursing homes know this can cause delirium EXACTLY like which she was experiencing and yet diagnoses her with vascular dementia without ever talking to the person living with her , not one word spoken to me. the doctor won't talk to the son of the woman he wants to commit to a nursing home for rest of her life? even when I called him he wouldn't even speak to me on the phone what a DICK! but it makes me very suspicious also, that he might be hiding something. a lot of money involved here, seemed to be trying to keep her as long as they could, rack up a big bill at the hospital, but of course the big enchilada is the nursing home committment.

Is he getting some sort of kickback to send them to nursing homes or something? Because it's either that or quack malpractice, i dunno how anyone could make that diagnosis when someone who's has a urinary tract infection for a long period of time. If they've had it for months and was never cured by her OTHER incompetent doctor the effects may be residual for some time after, i just can't believe how their incompetence and/or corruption has ruined my life, i can't believe how all these people seem to co-ordinate to act out plan to ruin everyone's life. taking someone to the hospital always seems to be like taking a wrecking to your life financially.

it seems like anymore they don't want to give you a curative dose of the anti biotics so you have to keep coming back, they are constantly giving these weak ass 3rd generation antibiotics that don't cure the diseases.

we need tougher regulations on the competency of doctors, no cure? no payment legally required.

my god, in other field, if they did not do the work and fix the problem and expected to be paid you'd say they're crazy.
if you took your car to have the brakes fixed and the guy handed you the keys back and told you the brakes weren't fixed but you owed him $500 you'd laugh in his face, right?

my mom had a urinary tract infection and lost her mind -- after some antibiotics --- she was as sharp as a tack!

doctors and hospitals and nursing homes are getting paid to KILL people --- medicare doesn't reimburse shit for saving people, but they are very generous when it comes to "palliative care" euthanasia...

Who took her to the doctor's appointment?

not me, Jesus what's the point of even taking them to the doctor anymore? unless they got a broken bone or something someone can physically fix, they can't even prescribe antibiotics right anymore.

Yep, I cared for my Mum at home for the last 17 years of her life. After her last fall she was bedridden and sure enough, every 3-4 weeks the delirium symptoms would kick in. Pee test and UTI diagnosed, straight onto antibiotics.... 3 days later 'sharp as a tack'.

These were serial infections I got to recognise the very early symptoms and each time the antibiotics sorted her out. I was a bit worried the meds would become ineffective but that never happened.

It seems OP's fears may be correct, it doesn't sound right not to give her antibiotics right away.
The Dr's priority to get her into a nursing home seems like he may be getting a backhander.

OP, I'm hoping your Mum gets a chance for some antibio's, it's very unprofessional of that Dr not want to speak with you.

If you would have been at the doctors appointment, it would have been easier to give input. You are correct that a UTI can cause delerium in the elderly.

But, isn't vascular dementia diagnosed via scan results - either a CT or MRI?

There is a medical director of the facility, call him with you concerns.

Get in touch with the social worker in charge of her case, tell her your concern and demand to talk to the medical doctor in charge of her and/or the medical director.

Re: so this doctor who works in geriatric psych knows my mom has a urinary tract infection, even all non doctors in nursing homes know this can cause
OP-- I have gotten frequent urinary tract infections due to my wel water water which has e coli.

I cured each UTI infection within about 6 hours with the following very safe herbal supplement-- "Cranberry with D-Mannose"-- the cranberry makes the urinary walls less attractive for the UTI biofilm, and D-Mannose is a sugar that is harmless to humans but that the bugs love to eat and then they die. So they get flushed down the toilet. It always works like a charm for me!!

I now drink only filtered water, not the straight well water. For some reason the cranberry alone does not work for me, but the Cranberry with D Mannose is an amazing supplement!!

For your Mom-- I would take her home for a while-- do not let them get their dirty hands on her!! If you need to, get her a home help aid for a few hours per day if her social security can pay for this. Get groceries delivered if possible and visit her frequently give instructions to the home health aid.

I would also talk to a lawyer about a simple a power of attorney for your mom or better--- simply apply to the court for a 1) Guardianship and 2) Financial Custodianship of your mom--- BEFORE someone in social services beats you to it-- and takes control over your mom without your knowledge.

The guardianship means that YOU control what is done with your dependent adult. The Financial Custodianship means YOU control all her financial affairs, including her pension, real estate and social security. I don't think this is too expensive, and would be worth it before some predators clean her out and leave you with the bill.
