I am a webmaster by trade, 17 years, and have noticed the Internet appears to be going through a consolidation phase in part due to Zuckerberg's Facebook and social media in general.
I recently started a Social Media Marketing Agency and have come to the realization that at least 3 main components of internet marketing are being phased out.
1. Websites - Realistically with a well thought out social media marketing plan a website has lost its relevance.
2. SEO - Social media targets your market so effectively that unless you are in search of a national or global audience SEO is no longer necessary. In general just having an active ongoing social media presence helps in your SEO, placement, indexing, and or ranking on the internet.
3.Hosting - You tube will host your videos for free. Facebook your content for free. And Instagram your images for free. Really who needs hosting anymore.
While beneficial for commercial use, I have seen elections won just utilizing a well thought out social media campaign.
