Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
Another clue to the role of negative ions in health comes from Russian research conducted at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in Pushchino, Russia. Researchers found that exposure to negative ions increased levels of the protective antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) in mammalian erythrocytes. The researchers also discovered minute amounts of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide), writing, “The primary physiochemical mechanism of beneficial biological action of negative air ions is suggested to be related to the stimulation of superoxide dismutase activity by micromolar concentrations of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide).” (26)

My working hypothesis is that an abundance of negative ions will help regulate the production of SOD, reduce mutations in SOD production, and help mitochondria damaged by mycoplasma infection heal.

Looking into more ways to help the body naturally produce more of this stuff. I own a negative ion generator, the Wein VI 2500 and have felt some pretty great effects. Faster recovery from exercise and being able to breathe through my nose all night. Amazing.

The diet recommended by Dr. Morse ND @RobertMorseND [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] , seems to help. Listening to his advice has helped me with my health issues immensely where many medical specialists failed. God bless.

Re: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
Superoxide Dismutase is an antioxidant naturally found in the body, and is a part of a class of "enzymes that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. It is also found in barley grass, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, wheatgrass, and most green plants. As such, they are an important antioxidant defense in nearly all cells exposed to oxygen," like skin cells. Superoxide Dismutase overpowers the damaging reactions of superoxide, and protect the cell from superoxide (the most common free radical in the body) toxicity; it has the fastest turnover number of any known enzyme.

Vitamin C and copper are necessary to make this natural antioxidant.

Re: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
SOD has recently gained notoriety for its connection with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This disease is a degenerative disorder that leads to selective death of neurons in the brain and spinal chord, leading to gradually increasing paralysis over a few years. Most cases mysteriously appear in later life, with unknown cause. But about a tenth of cases are hereditary, caused by mutations that may be inherited from parents. Recent research has shown that one of the mutations is found in the gene for SOD. Scientists are now studying the role of SOD in the disease, hoping that this knowledge will lead to new treatments and cures.

All organisms appear to have one form of SOD or another, but they have taken several approaches to the challenge. These enzymes all use different metal ions to perform the electron-shuffling reaction. Our own cells build three types of SOD. Copper, zinc SOD (shown here from PDB entry 1sos ) floats around inside cells to scavenge any superoxide, and a similar one is made with a sticky tail that glues it to structures outside of cells. A separate manganese SOD (PDB entry 1msd ) is used in our mitochondria. Bacteria build a variety of different SOD enzymes, including an iron SOD (PDB entry 3sdp ) and even an unusual nickel SOD (PDB entry 1q0d ).

Re: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
The ubiquitous superoxide dismutases (SODs) catalyze the disproportionation of superoxide to molecular oxygen and peroxide and thus are critical for protecting the cell against the toxic products of aerobic respiration [1,2]. As noted by Nick Lane in his book Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World [3], the discovery and naming of superoxide dismutase activity [1] is “… in the opinion of many, the most important discovery of modern biology never to win a Nobel prize.” This discovery and its implications transformed research on oxygen free radicals and anti-oxidants and their biological implications: There are greater than 60,000 scientific papers published on the superoxide free radical and its functions in more than 100 human pathologies.

Zinc, copper, and manganese are necessary for the creation of SOD in the body.

It is important eat foods rich in these trace minerals to optimize SOD production, especially in an environment saturated with negative ions.

Re: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
Low SOD levels are characteristic of the same debilitating diseases and health conditions where low glutathione is implicated: HIV/AIDS, asthma, burns, all cancers, cataracts, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, diseases of liver, kidneys, lungs, heart and digestive system, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s), neuropathies, physical traumas, skin disorders, seizures, tumors, chronic inflammation, recurring infections, susceptibility to colds and flus.

The production of SOD decreases with age, just like the production of our other endogenous (produced by the body) antioxidants, such as catalase, glutathione, and alpha lipoic acid.

Deficiencies in zinc (also a GSH cofactor), copper and manganese can impair the production of superoxide dismutase and lead to oxidative stress and cellular damage. Sufficient intake of these three minerals is very important in helping the body produce more SOD.

Amino acid cysteine is required for superoxide dismutase’s structure. This amino acid is also a crucial glutathione precursor and a rate-limiting factor in its production. Undenatured whey proteins are the best source of bioavailable bonded cysteine that has the ability to enter cells.

As I mentioned above, raising glutathione levels will improve SOD levels as well.

Great info OP - hope others learn about the important SOD enzyme!
Having a few snp's mutations of the SOD gene myself it took 20yrs and a lot of illness for me to learn how to recover.
Of course Big Pharma played no role!! They would have killed me off faster!

EMF's are also harmful in a more severe way than just the mere creation of positive ions.

EMF's from wireless internet, cellphones interfere with the frequencies of the brain.
Think of our brains as transmitters and receivers of information. The brain waves operate optimally at very specific frequencies to do this.
EMF's literally interfere with the brain frequencies creating all kinds of issues for the brain, body and mind.

Well that's kinda obvious from today's society isn't it?

If you can AVOID WIRELESS technology you'll be going a LONG way to preserving brainwave integrity, and thus, your health.

I've never carried a cell phone on my person.
I don't use it really - i don't use phones. When i do, i get a headache after 10 mins.
I have one on the shelf away far away from my main living and sleeping space, i use it only for emergencies.
I turn it off at night - shut off all of the house electricity supply.

My health improved remarkably by doing this!

50 years in the future we'll all be amazed that we use such technology, we'll see it like we do today of kids playing with mercury from thermometers in the 1950's.

Technology is useful but not if it's killing us all.
We have to draw the moral line somewhere.

I know we're all gonna die one day anyway but i'd rather die instantly knackered from living a full life than whimpering to my grave slowly over 20 yrs from a degenerative chronic illness brought about by our 'wonderful' advancements in technology.

Think this scenario is far fetched now?
It'll be common knowledge in 50yrs...guaranteed.

Ion channels gated by acetylcholine and serotonin: structures, biology, and drug discovery

Abstract:
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and the 5-HT3 receptors (5-HT3Rs) are cation-selective members of the pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs), which are oligomeric protein assemblies that convert a chemical signal into an ion flux through postsynaptic membrane. They are critical components for synaptic transmission in the nervous system, and their dysfunction contributes to many neurological disorders. The diverse subunit compositions of pLGICs give rise to complex mechanisms of ligand recognition, channel gating, and ion-selective permeability, which have been demonstrated in numerous electrophysiological and molecular biological studies, and unraveled by progress in studying the structural biology of this protein family. In this review, we discuss recent insights into the structural and functional basis of two cation-selective pLGICs, the nAChR and the 5-HT3R, including their subunit compositions, ligand binding, and channel gating mechanisms. We also discuss their relevant pharmacology and drug discovery for treating various neurological disorders. Finally, we review a model of two alternative ion conducting pathways based on the latest 5-HT3A crystal structure.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. Re: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
As a clinician, I have learned that what is healthy for one individual can be poison for another. When it comes to sulfur, most people NEED more of it and not less. This is because sulfur based amino acids are foundational components to many enzymes including the powerful anti-oxidant enzyme glutathione.

When the body metabolizes sulfur compounds it produces ammonia as a byproduct. Ammonia is toxic to the body but most individuals are able to easily excrete it through the urine. Unfortunately, some individuals have particular genetic mutations that do not allow them to effectively metabolize and eliminate ammonia....

...Protecting the Brain From Ammonia:

The brain is especially sensitive to ammonia levels and doesn’t have an effective way of buffering ammonia. If ammonia levels are high in our blood stream and it is able to cross the blood brain barrier it can be especially dangerous. Ammonia will cause massive inflammatory damage and destroy many brain cells.

L-glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and plays an important role in stabilizing blood sugar and reducing ammonia levels. When ammonia levels raise the body uses more glutamine in order to reduce the ammonia.

Magnesium is also very important as it helps to stabilize the blood brain barrier. When blood sugar is imbalanced it causes the body to use up more magnesium and leaves the brain vulnerable to ammonia toxicity. Magnesium is also important for glutamine metabolism by activating glutamine synthetase, an enzyme that helps to remove ammonia from the cells.

Other supplements that can be helpful include molybdenum, manganese, acetyl-L-carnitine and zinc as excess sulfites may deplete these.

You want to perform better at your job, become smarter, think faster, remember more, and maintain clarity and focus throughout the day.

Maybe you feel like you’ve plateaued in your mental development and think that you are deficient in something that your body is lacking – a vitamin, amino acid, something. You feel like you’re not as sharp as before.

If you have seen the movie, Limitless, with Bradley Cooper, you know what I’m talking about. Now, these supplements aren’t going to be like that, but will definitely give you an edge on the competition. Plus, it’s always better to be safe than endangering your health with dangerous drugs with high side effects.

I have used most of these supplements, still trying out a lot. Some are incredible, while others are hard to tell if they’re making a difference – and makes you think if you’re just wasting money. I will give you my opinions on each and tell you which ones that I had the most success with.

I have backed all of the claims of these brain supplements with scientific studies. They are interesting and worthwhile to read.

This is a really well presented compilation of nootropic type supplements: [link to www.flexyourbrain.com]

Re: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant; Negative Ions, Mycoplasma, Mitochondria, Gulf War Syndrome, Glutathione
And there is one food source out there with very interesting qualities where cysteine molecule remains intact during digestion.

Raw cow’s milk (or rather, milk whey) contains three highly bioactive proteins: lactoferrin, serum albumin and alpha lactalbumin. These proteins contain exceptional amounts of cysteine. And most importantly, in the form that can enter cells: each cysteine molecule is bonded with another cysteine molecule by a disulfide bond or bridge.

This paired unit is now called cystine (note the difference in spelling). It is pronounced /sis-‘ta-yn/. Cystine can easily enter the cell where it breaks down back into two cysteine molecules and participates in the formation of glutathione.

These disulfide bonds are very fragile and easily denatured by heat and mechanical stress. Pasteurization of milk multiple times at high temperatures before it reaches your table, as well as mechanical stress during centrifuging, destroy these bonds.

It makes cysteine from supermarket milk (and all mainstream dairy for that matter) absolutely useless for building glutathione. Humans outsmarted themselves by ruining the only viable food source of cysteine. For generations unprocessed milk, cheeses and yogurts used to be our ancestors’ sources of this critical glutathione precursor.

Undenatured whey protein concentrates or isolates are an excellent source of bioavailable cysteine and other glutathione precursors to support natural glutathione production.
