queenbee User ID: 72138947 United States 08/01/2017 10:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | sorry about your cat. i don't have any short term advice (looks like you got some good advice so far) (the d-mannose sounds good but i'd google and make sure it is ok for cats) but, longterm, my cats like this cat kibble called "wysong uretic". it's a kibble that supposedly helps with urinary problems. i don't rely on kibble, but i leave a little out for snacks. the barf diet seems to be the best diet for dogs and cats if you can do it. my cats are about half transitioned to it. (bones and raw food). cats are so picky that it is really hard to change them! haha good luck. |

Male cats are prone to crystals because of the skinny urethra. They can die very quickly from it, don't wait. I had a male kitty with that problem and he almost died. He will not be able to pass them like we can. "The more you know, the crazier you look" |

User ID: 73168454 United States 08/01/2017 10:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Friends, Quoting: Deplorable NO MORE Michele B If anyone has a helpful suggestion, I would appreciate it! Long story short: I have a 2 1/2 yr old cat w/UTI. Found this out after he quit using the litter box and I took him to the vet after July 4th week-end (just to let you know how long this has been going on). In the meantime, he's now on his second round of antibiotics since he could still see evidence of infection. Also saw crystals in his urine on second blood test, He's talking about possibly surgery. Well, we'll see about that! Well, while we're treating for the UTI, now he's still urinating everywhere - and I mean EVERYWHERE - except the litter box! So in self-defense, I put him in a dog crate - with a litter box when he wakes for about an hour so he HAS to use the litter box (and not my furniture/clothes/anywhere else he deems convenient). So, my kitty friends, here's where I need your help: Since putting him in the crate, I'm watching him trying, trying to urinate. He seems NOT able to "go" much now, and is meowing, as if in pain. I think he's trying to pass those pesky "crystals/stones!" All that's passing is a few drops at a time. I'm wondering if it's necessary to take him back to the vet before his regular scheduled appointment (next week), or if anyone has a suggestion of something I can give him that will help him pass the crystals? Thanks to those who will write to help. And to those who can't resist the urge to suggest I just make some "cat soup," save your strength. Yes, he can die from the crystals blocking him. If he is struggling, don't wait! Is he on a low magnesium food? Hills science diet CD is what you need. We have a cat with the same issue. IF we feed him anything but the CD food, the problem returns. Science Diet SD should be the first round. IT helps dissolve the stones. Then switch to CD for maintenance. (OP) User ID: 74910405 United States 08/01/2017 11:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | UTI blockages are common in male cats due to diet alone( specifically dry kibble with non meat ingredients), pure meat eaters have a hard time digesting anything but meat. If it's totally blocked it can be fatal( sound like its urinating so good). I worked at a vet hospital in the late 80's early 90's, AFTER the blockage has been addressed you will need to change the brand of Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46203780 dry kibble you feed him, as someone stated above they now make a dry kibble exclusively for this, you will need to give him a high acidic canned food daily for a couple weeks usual the liver kidney mix of chicken or beef is what the Vet would recommend, then once its better at least 2 times a week for the canned product. good luck I meant to address this, too. My cats are VERY finicky, and DO NOT like "wet" food, such as canned. It would sit and sit and dry out and turn to crust before they'd touch it! I will have to look into the specific dry kibble suggested, tho. BTW - he has an appointment to see the vet this afternoon (soonest they could fit him in). I wasn't thinking it was a good idea to feed him (HOPING he doesn't need emergency surgery....), but he seems to have settled down since I gave him something. It's a "gravy" thing? I have a few packages of it left from an OLD, OLD cat we had who died a few months back. It's very expensive, so I don't want to have to make it a permanent food (there are 6 cats here!), but I gave it to him as a treat, and I'm glad he ate it. He literally licked the bowl so clean you could use it again! I guess he was hungry! I hope he doesn't need surgery later, as I probably shouldn't have fed him, but he seemed so pitiful, and I knew he hadn't eaten. Gave himself a bath and sleeping now. At least he's not straining to go for awhile now. |

Good luck |

User ID: 74866411 United States 08/01/2017 12:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had the same problem. First, I used NOW product for UTI's for pets. I used 1/4 pill dissolved in filtered hot water and added to wet food. [link to www.nowfoods.com (secure)] Second, I took away all dry food. I would serve my cat about several times a week, canned in water tuna. I would add additional water and the dissolved UTI pill. Also fed my cat paté grain free foods stirred in ample water. Third, cleaned floors even tiled floors. And put down Nature's miracle and let dry. And put new styled kitty litter boxes out. Fourth, this is very important. These are my new styled kitty litter boxes. I put cut down boxes with no more than one cup of kitty litter. My cat used these boxes with about two inch sides. My cat must have disliked the deep kitty litter in boxes. My cat must have disliked the plastic liner I used in the deep kitty litter boxes as well. I have these boxes in my laundry room, two bathrooms and on patio. After one or two urine uses, just throw the box away. The cat uses these boxes. Fifth, we have a porcelain multi tiered drinking fountain that is filled with filtered refrigerator water. My animals do not like the reverse osmosis filtered water. It hold nearly a gallon of water. The plastic ones smell. Yes, these are pricey but I have had mine 5 years. The cat drinks from it, I happy about that. [link to www.chewy.com (secure)] UTI in cats have to do with the PH of their urine, too much dry food & not enough water. Their urine needs to be slightly acidic. Adding about 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to their drinking water will help as well. |
