People take pleasure in eating or drinking to excess, in offending others, taking what belongs to them & in destroying anything that upsets them

"Human beings are naturally inclined to seek pleasure; everyone knows that, and it’s normal. But is it wise for humans to trust their natural impulse when it constantly urges them to satisfy their instinctive needs? Should they yield to these urges without asking themselves where they will lead? Some people take pleasure in eating or drinking to excess, in offending others or taking what belongs to them and in destroying anything that upsets them. It’s easy to understand why they find these things so pleasant, for nature offers such a wealth of possibilities! But this tendency to seek pleasure is not completely justified if it is not well orientated and controlled by wisdom and reason. The impulse itself is perhaps justified but not the actions it inspires, and it should not be given free rein to fulfil itself.
All needs are magnificent, motivating forces; there is nothing wrong with them in themselves: they only become harmful when the other factor, namely wisdom, isn’t there to intervene and have its say."
