What OP is alluding to is he fact that we humans are highly suggestable. There are many strands to this and OP's theory makes sense. He's not saying that they are not happening on the contrary he's saying that the frequency of the attacks using this method will increase.

I take uber and the gps creates the most outrageously insane routes sometimes. If I don't tell the driver my preferred route we end up driving all over the place.

If you have bad credit they'll make it so your car goes at low speeds.
